Google home devices playing the song Lights

Brian5704

50% of the time when I ask any of my Google nest devices to turn off the patio lights starts playing the song titled Lights.  I can even see that it understands the words I am saying turn off the patio lights and yet it's still continues to play a song.  This has been noted numerous times by numerous people over the past several years.  Shouldn't there be a simple fix?

Hi @Brian5704

Thanks for posting in the community. I'm really sorry to hear that your Google Home devices aren't following the right command when you ask to turn off the patio lights.

Before we start troubleshooting, please reply to the following questions:

  • Are they Philips Hue light bulbs? If yes:
    • Is your Google Home device successfully set up on your Wi-Fi network?
    • Do you own Philips Hue light bulbs that are successfully set up on the same Wi-Fi network?
    • Are you able to control your Philips Hue lights using the Philips Hue mobile app?
    • Have you recently factory reset your Google Home or Philips Hue bridge?

Once you share this information, we can work together to find a solution.

Thanks,

Catheryn

These are not Phillips Hue lights.  These are Kasa Smart plugs.  They have been installed for years and working correctly on my home network.  I use the latest Google wifi router.  This is a fairly new issue occuring in the past few months.  If I say "ok Google, patio lights off" the work correctly.  If I say "ok google, turn off the patio lights" it then says ok playing lights from YouTube music.  I can see however that it heard me correctly by the words on the screen.  This is an issue reported by numerous Google customers according to a Google search.

Hi @Brian5704

Thanks for your reply and the additional information.

Please follow the next steps:

  • Check your Wi-Fi:

Make sure your phone or tablet is connected to the same Wi-Fi network as your speaker or display. You can usually find the network name in your device's settings under "Wi-Fi" if you're not sure which one it is.

  • Verify your Google accounts:

Confirm that both your Google Home and light bulb are on the same Wi-Fi network. Make sure you're using the same Google account on your phone or tablet that's linked to your Google Home.

  • Say this exact phrase to your Google Nest device: "Turn on the lights."

Let me know how this goes and we will find a resolution together.

Thanks,

Catheryn
