Don't Believe 10 Year CO Detector claim

I purchased 7 of these wired Nest Protects and was thrilled that they would last 10 years as they are pretty high up on the vaulted ceilings. 6 years in the first one crapped out with a message that there was a CO sensor failure and needed to be replaced. After a 2 hour dance with CS they concluded that it needed to be replaced and the 2 year warranty had expired regardless of the 10 year CO sensor life claimed on their website. A couple of months later another one crapped out with same story from CS. Then two months the third one crapped out for the same reason and I decided to replace it and the remaining 4 since they were likely to go when I was gone on vacation or out of town. Bottom line - forget the 10 year CO life claimed, they start crapping out at 6 years and the only fix is to replace with a new one.

Like any smoke and CO alarm, Nest Protect has a limited life. Fire and safety experts recommend that all smoke and carbon monoxide alarms be replaced after ten years, and because this has to do with the age of the sensors, it's calculated from the date of manufacture rather than the date of purchase or installation. This is true for all smoke and CO alarm products.

 

As the recommended life of the product is tied to the date of manufacture, there's always going to be some period of time that passes before the customer is able to use the device. Again, this is true of any smoke and CO alarm product and cannot be avoided.

 

Given that this device is a sensor and different from ‘plug and play’ electrical products, it has unique storage and stock rotation requirements.

One of my (multiple) Next Protects has a failed Carbon Monoxide error message.  The unit was manufactured about 5 years ago. This is half of the stated life of the Carbon Monoxide sensor.  The unit is now out of warranty.  This is dissapointing, as is the discovery that this issue is not isolated.  If the sensor is rated for 10 years, the warranty for the sensor in the unit should align with the projected lifetime of the sensor.  I purchased Next Protects for my home on the understanding these would be 10 year products, not half that amount of time.
