The subject line indicates my concern. A web search produces no information that explains why this happens. It seems that a Nest Protect can glow only Blue, Red, or Yellow. Those colors indicate that certain conditions are present. But the only condition that has occurred is the room has gone dark because the lights are no longer on. I'm hoping to get an answer so I'll know what I need to do, if anything. My guess has been that the orange glow means the batteries are reaching the end of their life, but it seems that if that were so someone would have mentioned it.

Hi @slawyer711,
You're right, a standard Nest Protect doesn't typically glow orange. The usual light signals are blue, red, and yellow. While there isn't a documented orange glow, there are a couple of possibilities for what you might be seeing:
Misinterpreting the Color: In low light conditions, yellow or amber light can sometimes appear orange. Double-check the color under brighter light.
Nightly Promise with a Faulty LED: Nest Protect has a feature called "Nightly Promise" that gives a quick green pulse each night to confirm working batteries and sensors. It's unlikely, but possible, that a malfunctioning LED might be displaying a faint orange instead of green.
Here's what you can do:
