False alarm/ not in app/ just “reset it?”

Magic168

woken up by an emergency smoke alarm this morning — ran around looking for what’s wrong and it stopped in about 30 seconds.

no notification from app happened and it still doesn’t show up in the history.

I called support and they just sent me instructions to “factory reset” it as the solution. Apparently this will also clear its history?  I’m not sure the support agent fully understood the seriousness of this — we are relying this for protection and now we question if it’s actually working correctly.

This can often happen when a Spiderweb gets into the smoke sensor. I recommend you clean the detectors exterior and interior with compressed air. Clean any dusk near the mounting point as well; if the issue persists, contact Nest support about defective detector.

Hi, @Magic168,

Thank you for reaching out to the community. I understand that you're experiencing a false alarm with your Nest Protect, and I apologize for the inconvenience. Let's work together to resolve this.

To help us troubleshoot, please provide the following information:

  • Is your Nest Protect battery-powered or wired?
  • Did you see any lights on the Nest Protect when the alarm sounded?
  • Are there any nearby sources of steam, smoke, or any other visible vapor?
  • Any previous events with Nest Protect such as false or legitimate alarms, chirps, or other unexpected behavior?
  • Does the reported sensor failure coincide with any recent construction, cleaning, or other activities that could have introduced dust or particles?
  • Where is the Nest Protect installed (room, ceiling, or wall)?
  • When was the last audio test performed?

Thank you for performing the factory reset. I recommend running a safety checkup on your Nest Protect. Please let me know the results.

Feel free to ask any questions.

Best regards,

Ana.
