Is Nest Protect discontinued?

nutmac
Community Member

I’m trying to buy 6 wired Nest Protects. After reading several "I got a 2-year old Nest Protect" posts, I want to buy directly from the Google Store to make sure I get newer stocks.

Unfortunately, the Google Store only lets me buy 1 unit.

Is Google discontinuing the product, or is it finally getting a well-deserved update? I know Google cannot comment on their future plans, but if it’s discontinued, I want to move on and get different smoke detectors.

Not a Google employee. They're not officially discontinued, but Google has demonstrated no desire to actively develop the product since buying Nest. They appear to be doing bare minimums to be able to keep selling.

With Google's performance (or lack thereof) with the failure to migrate the Nest Protect into Google Home, and lack of acknowledgement of serious known issues such as overheating batteries or announcing wrong rooms on alarm, I could not justify any new purchases of Nest Protects. Google's actions have shown they just don't care about developing an up to date detector.

Other brands have made smart detectors that are advertised to work in Google Home, and even have AQI air quality monitors for the same price or cheaper than Nest.

I do not expect Google would support these for the entire 10 year lifespan, but again, I'm just another customer.

The weird part is I think the Nest protects are one of their coolest products.   It integrates with their cameras and thermostat.   When smoke alarm goes off it lists the room it detects it and sends camera image to your cell phone.   It also turns off your Nest thermostat when it detects CO if you chose that configurable option.  The nest protects that are hard wired have a motion detector and turns on a dim led path light for you at night.  In the app the Nest protects lists when it detected motion.   It does a check once a month so you know they work.   Who else has a product that is so integrated like this?

I wish all this functionality WORKED. If Google got these into Google Home, I could use motion detection as a trigger, have lights turn on or flash when smoke alarm goes off, and program my non nest thermostat to shut down the hvac.

As it stands today, my Nest app will not notify me of a fire, or even sound checks. I can't use the app to silence detectors even if i'm under them. So the only function i get is the self testing and the basement detector is interconnected to the 2nd floor hallway outside the bedrooms. Seeing the path light glow when i walk by just gives me the creepy vibe that Google just tracked my movement, and I can't use that data myself.

If we had the ability to USE all of those functions, maybe the Nest ecosystem would be selling better.

The replacement brand I'm looking at appears to be supported in Home Assistant, so I could program actions based on the detectors sensors.

If Google had shown a desire to migrate to Home, I would have bought at least another 8 detectors and recommended them to others.

Can you share the replacement brand you are looking into?  I've been installing these for clients for years.  Now I'm concerned.

Kidde makes a series of smart detectors at different price points and the highest one includes AQI monitoring also. I haven't yet bought or installed any to give a review.

The Kidde ones are awful. We had to rip them down and destroy as they all have phantom alarms that go off all the time, with nothing going on. There are tons of reviews that state this. I have been trying to get more nest protects as those have always been great for me in many homes and cannot find wired to replace these other than one at a time. I found something on Amazon but I have no idea if they work well. I miss the interconnect4ed features of nest with the cameras and do not understand why they would stop support of them either..

I have 4 Nest Protects.   I have a newer Google camera from maybe 2 years ago that only works on google home app.   Not in Nest App.   My older cameras and nest protects, nest thermostat and 3 other remote nest temperature devices ae on Nest app.   I don't want to move to google home because of what i heard about not supporting nest protects.  And I like to see all my devices on my laptop which you can with Nest - not with google home. Google home website says its in beta - but I swear its been that way for a year or more.   Basically this is a mess.   Im stuck between 2 apps.   And it seems like its been forever since i heard about future support for Nest protects.   I dont trust that.   Ive been a huge nest/Google device advocate but this google home/nest lack of device integration with apps is making me look for other ecosystems.   I expect better from Google.

Hi  @sherveyj,

Thanks for posting in the community!

I can understand that it could be annoying to use 2 apps to manage your devices. We are working hard to create a proper environment for all devices and give all our customers the best experience possible.

Your feedback is valuable, and I appreciate you sharing your experience with the Google Home App and the Nest App.

We’d appreciate if you would take the time to share your feedback. We assure you that we're listening to your concerns.

This will help to improve the Assistant's capabilities.

Feel free to reply if you have any questions.

Best regards,

Derick

Directing users to that feedback form at this point is just offensive. No matter how much screaming and begging users dump into that form, Google isn't going to change anything.

Is Google actually "working hard to create a proper environment?" WHAT is being done? Nest was bought nearly a DECADE AGO! With a lack of communication or any demonstration of progress, we're left to guess.

Is this limit of buying 1 per day in place to push people to buy up the YEARS OLD inventory being held by retailers? If someone were to buy one per day, would they have to pay separate shipping for each and every detector?

This is a mess. Customers have low confidence in the product. Do better or send out the End of Sales notice already and put an End Of Life date up.

Is Google working on this? I have had Nest protects in 2 different houses since 2020 and have seen no motion on getting the Nedt Protects into Google Home. Not sure how it has taken 5 years to just allow me to monitor the alarms in one app

Hi  @nutmac

Thanks for reaching out to the community!

I’m happy to answer your question about whether the Nest Protect will be discontinued. So far, we don’t have any intention to discontinue the Nest Protect soon. What is happening is that we have some limitations about buying items in bulk directly from the Google Store Website. (you can buy a limited number of a specific item every 24 hours) with Nest protect the limited number of items is 1 every 24 Hours. I recommend you go to an authorized retailer  if you need more than one Nest Protect.

I hope that I answered all of your questions,  if you need more information don't hesitate to keep me posted.

Best regards,

Derick.

Google Store offered 3-pack discount as recent as about a month ago. Is that coming back? What is the reason for limiting the purchase to 1 per day?

Hi everyone,

Thank you for replying in this thread!

@nutmac the 3-pack discount was a seasonal offer and we hope the offer comes back soon, and about the limited items that can be purchased to ensure that as many customers as possible have a fair chance to purchase the product.

I also appreciate you chiming in @DanCoco  and i’m sorry to hear that you are not receiving notifications through the nest app, and  you can’t silent the Nest  Protect  with the app,  i’m here  to help you  with the issues on your Nest Protect, could you please reply the following questions:

What troubleshooting steps have you taken?

Does the Nest Protect appear online on the Nest App?

In the meantime you can also take a look at the following articles to find troubleshooting steps that will help you: Nest notifications not workingSilence Nest Protect.

Please keep me posted if you have any other questions.

I've been down the troubleshooting road before. I've put in the work, but it just doesnt work.  At this point, I'm not spending more time on diagnostics than Google does with development.

I own expensive self testing non-smart interconnected station alarms. I consider the legacy app fully non functional, and will just cycle in replacements as they expire. I've begun the process to degoogle over this lack of development and everything is working better as i migrate away.

Thank you.

I hope you take responses on this thread by other folks as a passionate plea to continue supporting the product. As the New York Times and many other publications reaffirm, Nest Protect is the best product on the market that deserves more attention.

@Derickf, do you know why the supply is so limited? Is Google planning on ramping up the production so that people can buy more than 1 at a time from Google Store?

Even the feedback form that @Derikf mentions, does not have Nest Protect as an option to give feedback on. I would say they are trying to quietly kill it off, only battery products available most places. Totally lame they don't come out and say anything. I love the Nest Protects and need to upgrade them..

Is the hardwired version being discontinued? Can only buy one from the google store with a shipping date of two weeks out. No one online has these in stock. So what's the deal? DO we need to start looking for different options??? This is ridiculous!

They'll never announce it if they do. I would look for alternative brands with recently released and developed products.

They launched Google Home in 2016 and bought nest a DECADE AGO, and still haven't got the protects migrated over.

What you're seeing on inventory limitations is just another clue they may be winding down.

Hi Derick. Answer this one simple question. Will the nest protect be migrated to the Google home app? Yes or No. pick one.

I have found major retailers, i.e., Amazon, Walmart, Home Depot have been mostly out of stock for several months. This is the 3rd one that's expired, but at least Google had it this time. Why aren't retailers making them available?

DanCoco

As Google has not communicated otherwise, and from seeing the reality of what has been reported by users on this forum, Google's likely quietly abandoning the Nest Protects.

The only consistent thing google does is graveyard their **bleep** and disappoint you. If you want to get some more life out of your cameras get the starling ai hub. Let's you use nest cameras in Apple home. It's great someone gives a **bleep** and won't just give up on their own product despite people spending thousands on them.

Wow they auto bleep you on this thing. What year is this and all I did was use a euphemism for crap.
