Is it possible for the Wired Nest Protect to run without the backup battery? The AC power is still connected though.

Hello loststars3112,

Thanks for posting in the Google Nest Community. I’d be happy to help you with your question.

If a wired Nest Protect doesn’t have any backup batteries, you’ll see a message in the Nest app about a power problem. This is due to Nest Protect automatically running a Self Test, where it checks its batteries and sensors every 200 seconds. It tests itself to make sure that its batteries, sensors, speaker, horn, and Wi-Fi connection are working. You’ll see the results in the Nest app and during Nightly Promise when you turn off the lights for the night.

Nest Protect's Self Test automatically tests the following things:

  • Sensors: smoke, carbon monoxide
  • Audio: speaker and horn (2nd gen Nest Protect only) Learn more
  • Power: battery charge (including backup batteries for wired Nest Protect) and 120V or 230V (depending on your region) line power connection for wired Nest Protect
  • Wi-Fi connection, so you can receive alerts and notifications on your phone.

We recommend having backup batteries installed in your Nest Protect. If your wired Nest Protect stops receiving power from the building's electrical wiring, it should automatically switch to backup battery power.

I hope that helps.

Best,

Lance
