Issue with scalding hot battery in nest protect

on_dre
Community Member

Had chirping low battery warning, took batteries out and scalded myself due to a battery being SO HOT,

I see others have had the same issue but have had their thread closed.

I HAVE NEVER known batteries to do this and I've had energizer ultimate's in my ADT PIR sensors for years.

Ambient temp of battery, more than 10 mins after removing was 50c. Thank fk I removed them within 5 minutes of the first chirping sound, this was a FIRE hazard.

I've tested all the batteries, none need changing and have good voltage output apart from the one that almost caught fire.......

I am concerned that the heat may have caused internal damage to the unit.

*Stupid label demands, it's neither web or connectivity, it's a consumer safety issue.

I had exactly the same issue today. Chirping low battery warning of one of my Nests. Which was strange, as I recently replaced all batteries with Energizer Ultimate Lithium. I replaced them again, but don't trust the Nest Protect anymore. I'm wondering what the issue is and whether I can safely continue to use my Nest Protects as I have my have used these through basically my whole home  (8 pieces...).

@wtbril, thanks for chiming in. I’m sorry to hear that you’re having issues with Nest Protect. Let’s check it out.

A few questions: do you have a wired or battery-powered Nest Protect? What is the software version of the device? To check, go to the Nest app > Device Settings > Technical Info > Software.

Battery life varies greatly depending on usage: how many times Nest Protect detects smoke or carbon monoxide (CO) and sounds the alarm, how often Path light turns on, where the Nest Protect is placed in the home, etc.

Here are some things you can try to extend the battery life:

Let me know if you have any questions.

Best,

Lance

Thanks Lance. Here are the answers:

  • Battery powered
  • Model: Topaz-2.7
  • Software: 3.5rc3

The symptoms:

I exchanged, triggered by the Nest Protect, a few months ago all 6 batteries by Energizer Ultimate Lithium batteries.

Monday 11 Dec it started chirping and the app told me to immediately replace the batteries. Which I found odd as I just exchanged them some months ago. Anyway, I did and then burned my thumb on one of the batteries which was cooking hot.

This has got NOTHING to do with how often the device detects smoke or carbon monoxide. Mine has never detected either. AND all of the batteries (apart from the one that almost exploded and damaged the Nest device with the dangerous heat output) are full. We are NOT alone or one-off's. Many other people have experienced the same issue and I've seen "closed" threads on here with people having the EXACT same issue.

Had exact same issue.

Removed batteries and they were almost too hot to touch. Binned them in a plastic bag. They were also lithium energizer.

Replaced with a new set. Agree that is'a fire hazard, but not Googles fault, but battery went bad somehow...

@on_dre @c240amg @wtbril

I’ve had this issue as well, twice. Google eventually replaced my units but it took quite a lot of checking in with them to get it done. I suggest that, in addition to continuing to follow up with Google for a replacement, you should take a moment to report this issue to the Consumer Product Safety Commission at: https://www.saferproducts.gov/IncidentReporting

I did this after someone suggested in another thread and google appeared to be more responsive after my complaint was published and sent to them by the CPSC.
