Nest Protect Devices Using High Bandwidth

davidhen2023

Does anyone else have a problem with their Nest protect devices (gen 2) using a very high amount of data?  As an example, over a 24 hour period between 4 Nest Protect devices I saw an download of 17.87 GB and upload of 40.73 GB - that's right GB, not MB of usage.

I can't find a forum or a thread online so figured to start here...thanks in advance for any information that's out there!

I have the same problem here. It really depends on how many you have. They are all connected 24/7 and are never not communicating with one another. For me, I have 7 so it sucks up the bandwidth but for someone with 3 or 4 it wouldn’t suck up nearly as much. It is completely normal for the protects to suck up bandwidth and while it may be unfortunate it is normal. That’s just one of the very few unfortunate things about having smoke detectors that wirelessly communicate

Hi, other than that one reply I have not heard back from anyone.

I suspect the devices were updating themselves but didn’t think they’d consume more bandwidth than my kids iPads

Hello davidhen2023,

We're sorry for the delayed response. That kind of internet bandwidth is very high for a Nest Protect. I would suggest you reinstall them and check their behavior. Just a reminder, the Nest Protect can only connect to the 2.4Ghz bandwidth of the internet and can only be set up to the Nest app.

Give these steps a try:

  • When setting up multiple Nest Protects they should be placed on a table near your Wifi router.
  • Perform a reset to factory default.
  • While pairing they should have a blue light pulsing, indicating that they are ready to be set up. If not, just press it one time.

Let us know how it goes.

I appreciate the help, Archie and Natewagner.

Regards,

Emerson

Hello, since I opened this thread back in Jan 2023, there have not been any other occasions where any of the Nest devices have utilized significant amounts of data so as weird as this was, it looks like it was a one-off event.

Thank you for the follow ups, and I support closing this thread when you are able to.
