Nest protect false alarm… tech support says buy a new device … 2 year warranty ended in august!!!

There has to be a better answer… for false alarm. 

2 year Warranty ended in August of this year, and now in October, the nest  protect is saying “heads up smoke detected in the kids room…” when there is no smoke. 
tech support says… sorry, but we recommend you purchase a new device. Period. 
suggestions?
