Nest protect software update: Issues

slimkrazy
Community Member

Hi folks,

I believe there was a software update around August for our Nest protects. Since then, the one in the upstairs hallway (called upstairs) has been going off really frequently when our bathroom door is left open for even the slightest amount of time. Even if the steam has visibly cleared. Honestly, this is driving us crazy as it's happening many mornings.  Additionally, the heads up warning has stopped working - it's just an instant alarm.

We've just now had two more alarms around an hour after my son had finished his shower in a bathroom with an extractor fan and an open window, opened wide enough for the wind to pull the bathroom door slightly ajar.

I was checking in the app and I see that there was another software update a around the same time that the alarm went off. We're on version 3.4.1.rc1.

Hey slimkrazy,

Thanks for reaching out! Let's see what's going on — could you tell us the type of Nest Protect you have (Wired, Battery)? What message are you getting when it alarms? Also, did any other third party devices alarm?

Check out this link to Prevent false smoke alarms.

Thanks,

Archie

Hey Archie,

When the alarm goes off, the message is something along the lines of : "There's smoke upstairs".

It's a battery operated unit.

We do not have any third party devices.

Apologies, but I didn't make it clear in the post: We've had the alarms in the same place for almost three years - it's only started behaving like this since late August.

Hi folks,

@slimkrazy thanks for getting back to us. To confirm, were you able to see the color of the light from the Nest Protect while it's going off? For troubleshooting, you may reset your Nest Protect to the factory default then check if the issue persists.

I appreciate the help, Archie.

Regards,
Emerson

Hey all,

Apologies for the delay.

We've had three alarms this morning with the bathroom door closed, bathroom window open, no visible stream in the hallway.

Unit was flashing red, no heads up.

I am about to attempt the factory reset now.

Ok, so a factory reset seems to have resolved this. I showered today and left the door open afterwards. Didn't even get the heads up. I will continue to monitor for the next few days until at least we're back at the point where we get a heads up for excessive steam.

Hey Edward,

Outside of the self-checks, we've not heard a peep from the sensor since the factory reset. All looks to be back to normal.

Thanks for your help on this.
