My Nest Protect just went end-of-life after 10 years. I purchased a new one and installed it.

You can bring your old smoke detectors to a local community recycling centre. Your best bet is to look at your municipal areas website, it should have guidance on this. For example, I am in Mississauga, Ontario, and I was able to bring them to the community recycling centre and drop them off, no charge.
