Connecting the learning thermostat to Google Home App

Snert
Community Member

I had the learning thermostat 3rd gen installed yesterday. I have the home app installed already as I have 2 nest speakers and a number of smart devices which all works via the Google home app. The installer guy told me to install the nest app before he arrived, so I did. I logged into the nest account with my google account and everything was fine. He set everything up and it is perfect via the nest app but it is not appearing in the home app. How can I get the thermostat to appear in the home app? Some simple steps please as I'm new to the thermostat. Please don't ask me to reinstall everything as that isn't a solution. Even the installer guy couldn't work out why the thermostat didn't appear in the home app. Yes they are both up to date. Any pointers appreciated.

Are you logged into the Home app with the same account you're using in the Nest app? Assuming so, try these steps in the Home app:

  1. At the top right, tap your account.
  2. Tap Assistant settings > Home control.
  3. Swipe down with your finger on the screen.
  4. There will be a spinning circle. The sync is complete when the circle disappears.
  5. Check for your device in the home control list.

Just going round in circles. I'm logged into both accounts with the same Google account. If I follow the instructions I get to a list of linked accounts (aleady linked with smart life) and I can search the list for the neat app. I click on it, click continue, and it loads home.nest.com. This gives the following:

Now that you’ve migrated your Nest account to Google, use the Google Home app to connect devices that work with your Nest devices. Go to the Google Home app, tap Add > Set up device > Have something already set up? Then find the name of the company that makes the device that you’re adding.

I get to a screen which either takes me to a list of accounts to link and I go round in circles. If I try an add an existing device it doesn't find it and then asks what it is.

Hi Snert,

Thanks for reaching out here in the Google Nest Community.

We're sorry to hear about what's happening and we'd like to try some steps here to help you further.

Given that you have the same account from the Nest app and the Google Home app, what we can do is to go to the Google Home app, try to log out and log back in. Also, check the Nest app and look for the home structure. It's possible that you have used the same account but the technician must've created a different home structure that is why some of your devices is not showing up in the Google Home app.

Let me know how it goes by replying to this thread.

Regards,

Ryan

Hey there,

Checking back in — how's it going? Have you had the chance to try the suggested steps above?

1. I tried to do the log out and log back in again but the google home app doesn't seem to have a simple "log out and log back in again" option. It seems I would need to uninstall it and I am not going to do that as I have a number of accounts on my phone and setting everything up initially was a pain in the neck.

2. Try from Google Home App - 1st method

Click +

Choose Set up device

Choose New Device

Choose my home

Click Next

Choose Thermostat when it doesn't find a new device

Asks for a QR Code

Didn't do that as the device is already set up and running and don't know if this will screw it up

Backed out

3. Try from Google Home App - 2nd method

Click +

Choose Set up Device

Choose Works with Google

From the linked services the nest app is not already linked, only smart life and tile are already linked, so if I scroll down to Nest and click Nest

Option appears to link an account to control Nest on any device

Choose continue

It opens home.nest.com in chrome on my phone

Option to type in my email address and password which I don't have a nest login. I can only log in with google, but there is no option to log in with google from that screen. If I type in my google address and my password, i get an error saying "Your email or password may be incorrect. You can try again. If you've migrated your account or want to create a new one, sign in with google" but there is no option to sign in with google. I don't want to create a new account. My account wasn't migrated as it was already set up using my google credentials.

4. Try from the Nest app or home.nest.com

I open home.nest.com and it logs in and I see my thermostat and the heating and hot water are off

If I click on my picture and choose settings I get the following options:

Account

Home Info

Home/Away assist

Spaces

Notifications

Family

Contacts

Nest Aware

Rebates and rewards

Add product

Buy Nest Products

Then a section called Products where I can see my thermostat

If I choose the account option I get a General section, Passcodes, Mobile Phone Locations, and Legal. Under the General section I can change my email address which I don't want to do, or manage account.

Under manage account, after looking for ages, the only thing I can see of relevance, is under security and it shows Third party apps with account access. I have Google Nest Mini which has full access to my google account and Nest which "has some account access". If I click on Manage 3rd party access all I seem to be able to do with the nest is remove the access. If I look at what it has access to it has:

Basic account info which includes "see your primary google account email address, see your personal info, including any personal info you've made public" and additional access which has "see and use data about your home from google home app (required)"

So, the accounts appear to be linked. It's just nothing is showing in my google home app and I can't give it commands via the nest speakers.

So, what next? I am not reinstalling accounts and apps on the phone. I just want this to work.

I tried something else. To clarify, I am doing this from my Samsung Galaxy Note phone and it has all the apps updated.

I opened Google Home and went to settings. Then I opened Google Assistant and clicked Manage all Assistant Settings. I then clicked on Devices and chose Add a Device. My options were to set up a new device or link a device, so I chose Link a device. I then get the familiar list of apps that it will connect to, so I scroll to Nest and open it. I click continue and it opens in Chrome to log in. This time I chose Forgotten Password. If I click on that I then get a link on the page to Sign in with Google which I didn't on the standard login page. When I do that I get a screen that says:

Access blocked: Nest's request is invalid.

You can't sign in because Nest sent an invalid request. You can try again later, or contact the developer about the issue.

Learn more about this error

If you are a developer of Nest, see error details

Error 400: redirect_uri_mismatch

If I look at the error details it says:

Error 400: redirect_uri_mismatch

You can't sign in to this app because it doesn't comply with Google OAuth2.0 policy

If you're the app developer, register the redirect URI in the Google cloud console.

Request details:

redirect_uri=https://nest.google.com/login/callback?style=oauth

Now before anyone tries to explain this to me, I'm a programmer and I understand what it means. What I want to know is what can be done about it? I know there isn't much I can do about it.

Hi folks,

I wanted to stop by and see how I could help.

Thanks for the assistance, @MelbaDT, @Ryan_G and @David_K.

@Snert, I'm sorry for the late reply and for the trouble this may have caused you. It seems that you've already exhausted all the possible steps, and I'd like to give it another shot.

Since you've already set up your Nest thermostat, there's no need for you to set it up on the Google Home App. Once you've verified that you're logged in to the same email accounts on both the Google Home App and Nest App, check for any other available home structures to see where your Nest thermostat is installed. Here's your guide on how to switch homes.

Let me know if that helps.

Thanks,

Mark

Still nothing. Trying to connect the nest app sends me to a web page to log in. The only way I can tell it to log in using Google is to click forgotten password. When I do that it gives an error which I've reported earlier in the thread
