Is there a way to set a maximum running time limit on the thermostats?

I can think of 2 possible applications:
1. Maximum daily limit - The thermostat can only be in cooling mode for a maximum of X hours a day
2. Maximum individual limit - Once thermostat enters cooling mode, it will automatically turn off after X hours. Even if the target temperature is not reached.

This would be beneficial in the case of a heat wave where you might not want to run your AC as much because you might never be able to even reach the temperature that your typical schedule dictates. Might also be useful in the case where the AC unit freezes up and becomes ineffective after a certain run time anyway.

Hello yakka yakka,

Thanks for reaching out to us and welcome to the community! We appreciate that you took the time to send us feedback. Let's see if we can find a similar feature for what you're describing.

If you don’t want your Nest Thermostat E or Nest Learning Thermostat to make automatic adjustments to its temperature schedule as it learns what temperatures you like and when, turn off Auto-Schedule. Then, you can manually edit the existing schedule, or create an entirely new one. Check out this article here to learn about setting the temperature thresholds in a manual schedule.

I hope this helps! Please let me know if this wasn't the feature you were looking for.

It does not. What we are looking for (no relationship) is the ability to set a run time limit to prevent units from freezing or over heating. This could be a good easy firmwaer option.

It would allow you to set say a 4 h h our cool limit. So the unit would run for 4,5,6 (what ever the user set) hours then take a break off how every long the user decides.

I have not seen a reply to this request - this would help considerably also when you are trying to only use a certain amount of electricity during certain high peak demand times.  This would allow you to still cool the house a little bit during these times, but not go over your limit.  For example - it is easy to determine how many KWH the AC unit uses in a 1 hour period, so if you could put in a setpoint during a certain time frame (say 2pm-7pm) where the AC unit was only allowed to run for 30 minutes each hour.  Can something like this be done??

If not - how do we get a feature like this added, because this would really make the smart thermostat much more useful and configurable.  Thanks!
