Duel Zone Nest Thermastat. No power to both when connecting R to both

I have a duel zone system. I installed one thermastat upstairs and one downstairs. My upstairs and down stairs had the following wire setup.

Upstairs: W, Y, G, R, C

------------------------------------------------------------

Downstairs: W, Y, G, R, C
R wasn't connected in the old one.

-------------------------------------------------------------

When I hooked the upstairs and downstairs the same, there was no power to either. When I removed R downstairs, that got no power but the one upstairs did. What is the proper way to connect these so they both have power?

Any help?

In a multiple zone system, each zone thermostat is wired to the main zone controller.  The power for the thermostat comes from the zone controller.  In larger multi-zoned system, a separate power transformer. In smaller systems the power for the zone controller and thermostats comes from the Air Hander.
locate your zone controller and open the cover, you will find the connections to the HVAC equipment on one side of the control board and thermostat connections on the other side typically.
Verify which color wires is attached to which control terminal.  Make sure what is connected to the R for each thermostat connected.
