Easy Question Re Setting Temperatures

I've been trying for 3 weeks to learn how to use my Nest E with only limited success. What I want to do should be the simplest set up: I want to duplicate a typical programmed thermostat setting: turn the thermostat down at night and turn it back up in the morning. I don't need AWAY or ECO or Sensing, just turn down at a specified time to a specified temp and turn back up to the original settings at a specified time.

I switched from my Honeywell thermostat to the Nest so I could monitor the house temperature when I was away during the winter, and change the settings if there was a need to do so.

Can I eliminate the ECO feature which I don't need? Is it normal for the room temperature displayed on the Nest to be off by 2 to 3 degrees when compared to two other thermostats which are placed within 6 feet of the Nest unit's wall location? Because the Nest is detecting an incorrect room temperature the house is cooler than I want. I'm sure the Nest can be set 2-3 degrees higher than I want to account for the difference but isn't it suppose to detect the actual room temperature?

Any assistance you can offer would be greatly appreciated.

I hope someone will respond to my request for help.

@Dave2Too thanks for getting back to us. You may control your Nest Learning Thermostat or Nest Thermostat E through home.nest.com but if you have the new Nest Thermostat, it can only be controlled through the Google Home app. Let us know if you have more questions in mind.

Just to make sure I understand:

...but if you have the new Nest Thermostat, it can only be controlled through the Google Home app.  Is there a NEW Nest thermostat as well as an OLD version?  If so, how can I determine which version  I have? Also, is the google home app only accessible via a phone and not a laptop?

I'm so frustrated.  I have the white thermostat with a gray display but the box says Google Nest Thermostat - snow- and the device Information states:" Model; thermostat-1.4".  Also, the wiring configuration corresponds to the Nest not Nest E.  So, it appears I don't have the Nest E.  Would the Device ID or Serial no. verify that? 

The link you listed displays Away, [my location], and Add Product and Nest E and Nest Learning, further confirmation that I have the basic Nest.

So, I still don't know if I should be able to set schedules using the Nest app using my phone  rather than the Home app. 

I can't believe how complicated this is. I definitely made a mistake buying this brand; it's already cost me $325 for purchase and installation.

We appreciate all the information you've shared and sorry to hear that you're having troubles accessing your Nest Thermostat. Seems like you have the new Nest Thermostat with a touch panel on the right side and you can only access it through the Google Home app only. You'll not be able to control it from the Nest App. If you have an old Nest Thermostat and tried to access it through the https://goo.gle/2qjvVSU that's the only Nest Thermostat you will see there.

I'm going to try to hire someone to show me how to use the Home app to set a very simple  temperature schedule: the same low temp 24 hours per day for the period when we're away this winter.  I might as well spend some more and be able to get the benefit for which I purchased the thermostat.

I'm on the same side with you. You should be able to get the most out of your Nest Thermostat. Hit this link for the steps on how you can set a schedule. You can also hold the temperature indefinitely here. Let us know how it goes.

I really appreciate your help and have been able to create a custom preset (in fact two of them by mistake) but I cannot follow the instructions in the In the Home app section of Hold the temperature on the Nest thermostat.  The note after step 5 states: If you're using the Eco preset, you can choose None to hold the temperature indefinitely until you end the hold.  That's EXACTLY what I want to do but I can't get to the point where NONE is a choice.

For reference, currently my screen shows the name and location of the thermostat, and the temperature adjustment circle states Holding Eco....69 [degrees]...until 11 AM. The Hold temperature screen states: ActiveTo change the hold settings you need to end the Eco temperature hold.  It is currently set to end at 11:00 AM.  I assume this is about where I should be able to choose None to indefinitely hold that temperature.

Any suggestions as to how I should proceed?

Thanks for your update. Try doing the steps on the actual Nest Thermostat display.

 

These are the steps:

Start a temperature hold

  • In the Menu view, select Hold temperature.
  • Select Current temp or Eco.
  • If you’re using the Eco preset, you can also choose None to hold the temperature indefinitely until you end the hold. For other presets, your thermostat can hold the temperature for up to 24 hours.
  • Select Confirm.

 

Note: If you want to make changes to the temperature but there’s a hold, the app or thermostat will tell you that you need to end the hold first.
 

End or change the temperature hold:

Note: You must end the current hold and start a new hold to change the hold settings.

  • In the Menu view, select Hold temperature.
  • Select Stop to end the temperature hold.
  • Follow the steps above if you want to start a new hold on the temperature and change the hold settings.

I hate this thermostat! It's so sensitive that I have to redo most of my actions.

I selected Hold and then selected Current temperature then selected Continue (rather than back).  The next screen was Select End Time.  There was no option to select Eco so I couldn't set a low temperature and then select None.

Thank you for being so conscientious. 

I've learned enough to get by with the Nest but I have no interest in spending more time learning features I'll never need or want.  I've never successfully tested changing the temperature setting from a location other than in my house but if I need to do that I believe I'll be able to figure it out.

Clearly, the time, aggravation and cost of the Nest made it a bad purchase for me.  But, what's done is done.  Hopefully, it'll keep on working since going back to my programmable thermostat is probably no longer an option.

I totally understand you, and I'm sorry if you have to go through this. I found another step that would help so your thermostat won't switch to Eco mode randomly. You might have had an action available for your thermostat in the Routines. To remove this, please follow the steps here for the step-by-step instructions, and if there’s anything else I can help you with, please let me know.
