Seen this somewhere, not sure if it makes sense to you:

SOLUTION: So basically, I had to add a C wire (even though no where did anything say for sure that that was what was needed), and then NOT TELL the Home SET-UP app that the C wire was there. So I hope this helps someone else, and saves that person many frustrating hours!

This has been an issue for over 2 years.  This answer does work, but it's a work around/hack.  Completely unacceptable, that Google hasn't remedied the issue.

Hey folks,

Thanks for responding and for your suggestion, @Ddaannbbb

@Docirv, thanks for reaching out and welcome to the Google Nest Community. E294 means that you need to check wire configuration in the Google Home app. Please go through the suggested troubleshooting steps on this link: https://bit.ly/3qjt7Si

Keep us posted.

I had this same error. Turns out it was due to having erroneously selected Electric rather than Gas Furnace at setup (Electric is pre-selected). Reinstalling the nest and selecting correctly fixed the error.
