HOW DO I STOP NEST THERMOSTAT FROM CHANGING TEMP ON ITS OWN?

michaelzjody
Community Member

I set my thermostat at night to 64 degrees.  When I wake up it is set at 68 degrees.  I DO NOT WANT THAT.  I have turned off ALL of the auto settings, and have nothing on the schedule, but it still does it.  HELP!!!

Does your thermostat change its temperature on its own? After you set it to 70 at night? When you call for heating does it take time for the heat to come out from your vents?

Yes, right now I am boiling, but when I put on cool to 73 degrees, it says not for 2 hours!  I work at home and am going crazy!!!

Finally solved. Google has made this incredibly nice device extremely difficult for everyday people to sort out. If anyone is interested, I can post my exact settings in which any one of them could have/May have/possibly have/thinking about having, solved the problem.

Yaacov586:  PLEASE post your instructions!  I am sure the entire community would appreciate it if you have solved this problem.  My thermostat was set for 55 degrees (it is hot here and I don't have central AC).  Yet when I woke up the thermostat was set at 69 degrees!

Hey everyone,

I can honestly appreciate how annoying that must be. No worries, we'll check this out. After you turn off the Autoschedule on your Nest Thermostat settings. Did you reset or clear  you rexisting  schedules on Nest thermostat? Have you tried  to turn off the Eco Temperature in the Nest thermostat settings? Here how’s:

1. Go to Settings on your Nest Learning Thermostat.
2. Find Eco Temperatures.
3. Set Cool to and Heat to both to Off.

Let me know if that works.

Thanks,
Edmond

Hi EdmondB, just tried to follow your instructions above, but when I go to eco temps, there is no option to turn off, I can only select a different temperature...?

You have to turn it alot... I thought the same thing but I did find it.

Dear EdmondB:  Like michaelzjody, I do not have an "off" option in the eco temps setting on my display, only the option to change the heat and cool temps.   I have two units and two thermostats, and am now researching options to replace  these Google Nest products.

Hi everyone,

Thanks for trying, Both for Nest thermostat E and Nest learning thermostat once you go to Eco Temperature in Settings and highlighted Cool to or Heat to if you keep on scrolling to the left or right then reaches the minimum and maximum temperatures range ( 40-70 °F (4-21 °C) for heating mode and 76-90 °F (24-32 °C) for cooling mode.)  next option for that will be OFF. For example you want to turn off Eco temperature for Heat to just scroll to the left and once you reach 40 F the next option for that is off.

Let me know if that helps.

Best,
Edmond

I have done that but my problem isn’t still solved

Please acknowledge that this is a very underhanded way to take control of my temperature settings. What happened to "Do no evil". Or, did that slogan retire with the original cofounders?

What if you have a regular nest thermostat? Leaf is always running and I can’t turn it off. I want the room 71, not 73. I don’t care if it is peak time or not. I’m home two days a week and leave the thermostat off when I’m not home so I use very little energy. Let me have the temp I want. Do I have to set it to 65 to ensure it won’t go above 70? Seems like a waste. Turn off leaf should always be allowed.

Hey everyone,

@MichelleShelly, here is the link to turn your Nest thermostat just like a traditional thermostat.

Let me know if you have additional questions.

Best,
Edmond

Thank you for this! Just reset everything and will see if it works!!

When I try to adjust my ECO, it does NOT go left or right and there is no OFF option. Won’t let me select it to lower than 76°. I’ve screenshot for reference but no option to attach pic. Please help. I’ve set thermostats to 70° in my sons room and while he naps it goes up to 78° which wakes him bc it gets so hot so fast. We’re in Texas where it’s 111° outside.

Hi there,

I just wanted to follow up and see if you still need any help. Let me know if you have any additional questions from here.

Regards,
Edmond

I'm stumped.

Where is the info you reference above?

I've used programmable thermostats for 28 years.

At this point, I've resigned myself to waiting for my HVAC guy to come for the fall checkup and see if he knows how to get this thing under control.

In the meantime, I'll keep checking and trying to override for another hour or two. (and obviously can't do that if no one is in the house.)

Not happy about wasting money on unnecessary cooling but keep reminding myself that this product is the result of first world incompetence.

Do you have to have the fan set to run I know it keeps the house cool. Currently I’m at 76 I have switch to 68 to get cool it’s been at that range for about 2 hrs now plus the temp stil says 76 on the right 😩🤬

Same 😭😭😭😭

I had my fan set for 45 min I just disabled it the issue I’m having is my temperature is 76 on the right I have to cool at 68 but it’s been that like for the past 2hrs why is it taking so long it’s hot asf

Thank you for the followup.  YES I still need help.  I want to stop the thermostat from changing the temperature without my asking it to.  HOW DO I MAKE SURE IT DOES NOT DO THAT AGAIN?

I'm having the same problem. Try Settings, then select Nest Sense, and click on Auto Schedule and turn Auto Schedule OFF. Surely this is the solution!  The other guidance was clearly unrelated. If this doesn't work for me, I'm going to set up a PIN for the Lock feature (under Settings).

Thank you for the followup. YES I still need help. I want to stop the thermostat from changing the temperature without my asking it to. It did it again last night.  I woke up to the heat coming on even though I did not want it or ask for it!  HOW DO I MAKE SURE IT DOES NOT DO THAT AGAIN?

Please share with me!!!

Having similar issue bring away

I try every day and the thermostat returns to 85’

please post the solution

Greetings,

I have changed the following settings listed below. Now, the T-Stat stays at whatever temperature range I set. Right now, it is set to heat at 67 Deg F and cool at 74 Deg F. Sometimes, I set to 73 Deg F. It has held this temperature without problems even after numerous power mains outages.

Using the app, under the settings cog on the main menu:

-HOME/AWAY ASSIST = "Off"

-AUTO-SCHEDULE = "Off"

-MODE = "Heat-Cool"

-ECO = "Off"

-All Schedule has been deleted

-HEAT PUMP BALANCE= "Max Savings"

-COOL TO DRY= "Off"

If that doesn't work, let me know and I will see if I can download the settings configuration data.

I need this T-Stat because it is connected to the Google smoke/fire alarms and will shut out the cooling system if an event is detected.

Hmmm my best doesn’t have any of the options on settings

this is the same problem I am having. I said it at night and when I wake up in the middle of the night sometimes it has gone down to 40°. I have wiped out all of the settings for each day and that doesn’t seem to change anything.

Hey everyone,

I wanted to hop in and make sure you're seeing the suggestions that eveluna has shared thus far. These are good troubleshooting steps to take for this situation. If you've given those a try and are still seeing the same problem, please let us know.

Thanks,

Jeff

Jeff:

So you are saying to reset all settings?  I did not see another suggestion from eveluna...?

Kindly follow the instructions from this link: https://support.google.com/googlenest/answer/9209007?hl=en

  • turn off auto schedule
  • from settings>reset>auto schedule
  • stop using Eco mode

Do all these steps and you'll have to manually do everything with your thermostat. This is an option that worked from my end.

Thanks for the above, but I can't seem to find how to turn OFF eco mode.  There is no switch which shows that it is ON or OFF...?

Hey michaelzjody,

Here's the process for managing ECO mode. Select your thermostat on the Nest app home screen. In the top right corner of the screen, select Home/Away Assist. At the top of that screen you can disable automatically switching to Eco Temperatures. This link will also give you a lot more context about ECO mode: https://goo.gle/32G4y6M. Let me know if that gets you to where you need to be.

Thanks,
Jeff
