Hi Jack,
Thank you for reaching out, and I am sorry to hear about what's happening with your system. This error means your Nest Thermostat is not detecting the C or common wire. If you have a 2 wire system connected to your new Nest Thermostat, it is required to have a common wire connected. This is to provide stable power to your Nest Thermostat, and to prevent draining of its internal battery, and be connected to your WiFi.
You can check your wiring, look for unused wire, or check this link to know more how to install a common wire. There is also the Power Connector available on the Google Nest store that can replace a common wire as an alternative.

Tech was at house and says there is bo common wire in a 4 wite sustem box days nest will work without a common wire but app will not let you configure without choosing a common wire what a piece of crap

The Nest Learning Thermostat can typically use the cooling and heating cables in your system to charge its internal battery. To reliably supply power to your thermostat, however, there are some circumstances when they would need to connect a common or C wire or the Nest Power Connector.
