@msherman , well, the system you have is a heat pump with auxiliary heat, and the only problem you’re gonna run into is the nest thermostat back plate is not compatible with stranded wire. A proper thermostat cable is comprised of a solid conductor, wire of 18 gauge or possibly 16 gauge.

Hi msherman,

Thanks for reaching out to us. I hope you've already gotten the answer you're looking for from what CoolingWizard has shared. You can reach out to your local HVAC technician or contact a Nest Pro to have your thermostat wires rewired for you from stranded wires to solid copper wires to make it compatible with our Nest Learning Thermostat 3rd generation. Also, here's a guide for you on the installation and set-up of a Nest Learning Thermostat once you have it already.

Please let us know if you still have questions or concerns, as we'll be willing to assist you further.

I appreciate your help, @CoolingWizard

Best,

Zoe
