You current thermostat communicates with the HVAC equipment digitally. This is not compatible with conventional 24VAC HVAC control systems. The good news is that manufacturers of the HVAC equipment generally include a conventional terminal strip on the control board. This will require rewiring the the air handler in order to use the Nest Learning Thermostat.
If you can get the manufacturer and model number for your indoor unit, I can check the manual and verify that does indeed have the conventional terminal interface.
