First, figure out which model you have, because there are so many differences: https://support.google.com/googlenest/answer/9246551
Then go to the appropriate section on this "Beginner's Guide" page: https://support.google.com/googlenest/answer/9248184
specifically the section titled, "If you moved into a home with a Nest thermostat already installed".

You should also verify that the previous owner or resident has removed the thermostat from their Google account in the Google Home app, as specified in this link, or you may get a "connected to another account" error message when trying to install it on your account and will be unable to continue:
