Latest version of Nest not working with two wire heating system

Laurawoodstock

I just bought the latest Nest and thought it was compatible but it’s not. The setup guide says that my W and Rh wires aren’t enough to be compatible and I need to get some kind of extra part. My electrician looked confused and clearly was stumped too. I googled it and find a YouTube video that says the latest version of the Nest doesn’t work with two wire systems. Would it be easier to get the older Nest or to get this extra part thingy that the setup guide suggested? Thanks all!

Hello Laurawoodstock,

Welcome to the Google Nest Community Forum. I'd be happy to take a look at this for you.

It seems like the latest Nest Thermostat 2020 model with a finished mirror display and is compatible with your two-wire system, specifically requiring additional wiring to sustain and provide additional power to the thermostat.

You have two potential solutions: either consider getting a Nest Learning Thermostat model, which might be a simpler option as it's not usually required to have a C wire (24-Volt common), or explore the extra part suggested in the setup guide below.

Consider getting the extra part recommended in the setup guide, as it may resolve compatibility issues with your two-wire system. Let us know if you have more questions.

Regards,
Mark
