Need help with Y and W wiring when I only have heat (W) but I only get power from Y (cooling)

We are only connecting our heat to the nest thermostat but when we connect the heat to W, we get no power, but we get power when we connect the heat to Y, which is cooling. The heat kicked on but it wouldn't stop and the nest said cooling. I think I'm going to restart myself and go to bed.
