Nest 2nd gen

SparkFord
Community Member

Hi,

my nest third generation thermostat worked well for a number of years but keeps now switching to Wired connection only . The heating then switches itself off, even though the display is still showing that it’s heating. I then need to connect to the Wi-Fi again. The Wi-Fi connection in the room with a Nest is very good therefore I don’t know why it keeps disconnecting.

@SparkFord

If your Google Nest Learning Thermostat gets low on power in the battery, it starts conserving by turning off WiFi.  on the display go to settings and then go to equipment and then go down to power. Double check the numbers and report back please.

Hi
Thanks for your response. The nest thermostat has a hardwired power connection. When I go to settings/equipment there is no power section. The only options I have under equipment settings are done– heat link – heat type – test.

This is the trouble with the forum not segregating UK from USA thermostats, we cannot give the correct information without knowing the country. This obviously is not your fault, but Cooling Wizard assumes you are in the USA.

You are in the UK/EU I assume?

You will find you battery voltage in Settings - Technical - Power if you are.

How is your thermostat connected to wifi, direct to the router of via a booster/adapter?

Hi,

yes, I’m in the U.K. and thanks for directing me to the power settings.

battery 3.897v

vusb 1.11v

vin 11.11v

lin 100mA (c)

Which thermostat do you have, as you mention 2nd and 3rd?

Are you connected direct to the router or via hotspot/booster etc.?

The battery voltage is good at 3.897v, it's the lin that is low for a 3rd Gen thermostat. I think it's in the limit, but all I have ever seen is 200mA.

A mod will jump to your help I am sure!!!

Thanks for your response. It’s a second generation nest.

.................and the other question?

Yes indeed I have no understanding of the European Nest Thermostat/Heat link products.

Connected directly to the router

That's a good answer, as connection to boosters is not.

You will have to have a dig around the Net to see if you can find information on the 2nd Gen lin voltage, but I am sure 100 - 200mA is the range.

Would you by any chance have a smart meter, as they have been found to cause issues.

Thanks. Yes, got a smart meter.

Hi there,

Thank you for reaching out to the community. I understand that the heating suddenly stops, even though the display still indicates that it's heating. you then need to reconnect to the Wi-Fi back. I'm happy to help you!

To help me find the best solution, I'll need to ask you a few questions:

  • May i know what Nest thermostat do you have?
  • Is there any error code or message?
  • To help us get a better picture of what's happening, do you mind sharing a photo of the Nest thermostat wiring and heat link?
  • Which color does the hear link have?

Keep me posted.

Best regards,

Rusell.

I’ve again reset both the Nest thermostat as well as the heat link to factory settings and it has been working fine for about a day now.

Hi Rusell,

there is no error message and the light on the heat link is green. The nest has only got hard wired power supply. As per my previous post it worked fine for about 8 years.

When it says wired like on the last picture the nest screen turns orange when the temperature drops below the required level but the heating doesn’t come on. I then need to change it to wireless in settings/equipment again and once it is connected as per this picture it starts to work again. Unfortunately only for a limited time until it changes to wired again.
