Get this message repeatedly: "There was a problem connecting to the Nest Service. Try again in a few minutes." Needless to say, it NEVER connects. I have reset the thermostats, reconnected successfully to my wifi, rebooted the router. No connection to app.

I'm sorry to hear about your Nest app but thanks for posting. I also appreciate that you've taken the time to try those steps already.
Could you try uninstalling your Nest app, rebooting your mobile phone then reinstalling back the app? Once done, try signing back in. If the message persists, try another mobile device.
