Nest T-stat and dual zones

Hello,

I have an HVAC system in a home with two zones (upstairs and downstairs). There are periods when the house is unoccupied for a few weeks at a time in the winter so we leave the temp set at 55. I would like to install a Nest T-stat in the downstairs zone. Can I do this but leave the other conventional t-stat in the upstairs zone?

Hi Whaanga,

Thanks for posting here in the Community forum. Yes, you can install one Nest Thermostat in one of the zones in your HVAC system while leaving the other zone with the traditional thermostat. The Nest Thermostat will work and will be installed in one zone without affecting other zone with the conventional thermostat. You ought to also check your wiring and connections to allow for the Nest Thermostat installation in the appropriate zone. Using the Nest app, you can set the temperature in different zones and schedule the Nest Thermostat to control heating and cooling for that specific zone based on your set schedule.

The conventional thermostat will function in a different zone, maintaining the temperature according to its settings and clock. These two zones operate independently, so you can have different temperature settings and schedules for each zone. The setup is very beneficial in dual-zone or multi-HVAC homes, where it provides more fine-tuned control and reduced energy costs in every zone. When the house is empty, you can set the temperature to 55 degrees and then either direct the Nest Thermostat to 55 degrees or through the Nest app use the Eco Mode or Away mode to automatically adjust the temperature to an appropriate energy-saving level.

Let us know if you have any other questions.

Best,

Zoe
