Nest Thermostat Compatibility ?

I'm new to Smart Thermostats.  Can a basic Nest thermostat be compatible with any house's heating system ?  

Our house was built in 1989 and has the original thermostats/electical system.

@cparrinello, in addition to what was mentioned above, if you have a photo of your existing thermostat's wiring, please share it with us so we can see how it was labeled. Also, the make and model of your heating unit would be a great help in determining your system's compatibility.
