Nest Thermostat - jumper wires

carmelchase

I am not sure if we can use the Nest Themostat: I am not following what the jumper wires are for. Are they actually performing a function in my system? I understand Nest does not use them, but I want to better understand what their function is before I proceed. Is Nest Thermostat compatible? (NOTE: I have already looked at the Compatibility Checker link.)

Hi carmelchase,

Thanks for posting here in the Community forum and for showing interest in our Nest Thermostats. Fortunately, your thermostat wires are compatible with our Nest Learning Thermostat 3rd generation and should be wired to the Nest Learning Thermostat as shown:

Jumper wire is not needed for Nest Thermostats, so you can disregard it. Also, here's a guide for the installation and setup of a Nest Learning Thermostat.

Let us know if that helps.

Best,

Zoe

Hi Zoe - thanks for your response. I am looking at the Nest Thermostat, is that different from Nest Learning that you mention above? Is my thermostat compatible with Nest Thermostat? Please let me know, thanks.

Hi there,

@carmelchase, I believe you're pertaining to the Nest Thermostat 2020, the mirror type. Fortunately, your system is still compatible with that.

You can take a look at this wiring guide:

  • Y - Yellow
  • G - Green
  • R - Red
  • W - White
  • *OB - Brown

Please let us know if you still have questions in mind.

I appreciate your input, Zoe.

Regards,

Jenelyn

Hi @Jenelyn_O , thanks for your response, and I am glad to hear we should be compatible with the mirror-looking version (that's exactly the one I was talking about 🙂 ).

The wiring guide all makes sense, but I am not understanding what the jumper wires do currently. What is their purpose? Before I remove it, I'd like to better understand the jumper wires' function. I have done some research, but I am still not sure.

What do the jumper wires actually do?

Hey there,

I'm dropping by to make sure everything is covered here.

Thanks for looking into this, Jenelyn.

@carmelchase, it's great that you're diving into the wiring guide and seeking to understand the purpose of jumper wires. Jumper wires play a crucial role in electronic circuits by creating connections between various components on a circuit board.

Here's a great article to learn about thermostat jumper wires. Let us know if you have more questions.

Warm regards,
Mark
