I installed a Nest Thermostat a little over one year ago. For the first year it was fine, then all of a sudden one day it started displaying error messages saying the batteries were dead. It said the battery voltage was something absurd like 0.05V. I took the batteries out and checked them with my multimeter and they were about 1.4V each. I grabbed some new batteries, tested those, they were 1.55V each, and I put those in. It took several days for the low battery voltage error message to go away. The thermostat displayed a measured battery voltage that went up slightly, a fraction of a volt per day, until it stabilized around 2.5V (which was still below actual battery voltage). A month later, all of a sudden one day with no warning once again the thermostat said battery voltage was <0.1V and batteries needed to be replaced. And once again, my multimeter says actual battery voltage is ~3.0V combined. And again today, about another month later, it says the batteries are dead again when in fact they're just fine. What gives? I've done multiple factory resets, so don't tell me to do a factory reset. And yes, it has perfectly fine 24VAC supply. If it didn't, the first battery wouldn't have lasted a year.

@Patrick_Caezzayes, the common wire is connected and has been since initial installation. It worked fine for the first year, before starting to fail once a month.

I haven't done anything since yesterday, but today the thermostat says the batteries are good and battery voltage is 3.143V. For several days it said battery voltage was 0.0-0.2V, and all of a sudden it's decided it's normal again. In a few weeks it will say batteries are dead again.

Do you have a heat-only system?
When you originally installed the thermostat, was the C wire there, or did you add it?
06-12-2023 05:35 PM
Yes, it is a heat-only system. Previously there was no C wire, and the C wire was added when the Nest thermostat was installed. Connecting my multimeter to R and C reads 28.4VAC.
As I said in another post, yesterday the thermostat said the batteries were dead, but suddenly this morning it said they were fine again (3.143V, 865mOhm). Then this afternoon it said the batteries were dead again (0.9V, impedance N/A). And just now it says batteries are fine again.

Oh, nevermind. I just looked at it again and it says the batteries are dead again. An hour ago it said battery voltage was 3.1V and now it says battery voltage is 0.9V and impedance is N/A.

Hi folks,
@tllado, thanks for posting here in the Community forum, and I'm sorry to hear about the situation. Let me take a look at this for you.
What type of Nest Thermostat do you have? Also, can you help me with your Nest Learning Thermostat's power reading?
I appreciate your help, @Patrick_Caezza.
Best,
Zoe

Yeah. The thermostat is still malfunctioning. I did finally get to chat with tech support, and they confirmed it's simply broken. But since I didn't report it until after the warranty expired, there is no solution for me. It's ridiculous that a $100 thermostat starts malfunctioning after eight months. That's the end of me using Nest products. Thanks.
