Nest Thermostat

Why can’t I set the difference in Temperature Preset to less than 3 degrees? Another words, if I set the cooling temperature to 73 the highest I can set the heat to is 70 degrees

I keep hoping that someone with expertise in your model will jump in, but nobody has.  So, here's a link to a thread where another owner asked the same question.  Note that I fumbled into an answer but don't know yet whether it worked for that owner.

Hey there,

Thanks CBFox for the help.

I wanted to check in and see if you managed to see CBFox's post. Please let me know if you have any questions from here. I would be happy to assist, and make sure you are good to go.

Best regards,
Jake

I did see it. I understand the reasoning but only if I have the thermostat set to Heat/Cool. When set to heat or cool only I should be able to set the temperature difference to anything I want.

Yes, that would be logical.  But apparently the Nest wasn't designed that way.  Apparently, based on your experience and that other poster's, each temperature preset is going to be available for selection in any of your home's modes.  You may be setting up a preset for heating use only, but the Nest might also let you use that one in Heat/Cool mode, so it enforces a wide enough range to prevent your heating and cooling from becoming locked in a battle for dominance.  That's my guess, anyway, just based on your post rather than actual knowledge about your particular model.

In my second reply on that other post I suggested how to create custom presets for use with Heat and Cool modes separately.  Each of those presets could be 72, for example (heat to 72 on the one and cool to 72 on the other, I mean); no gap required between them.  I don't know whether that would work for you.

On the surface that sounds like a good solution but, for example, when you setup a schedule you’re not allowed to have custom presets with schedule times that overlap. So I can’t setup a heat schedule from 8am - 10pm and also a cool schedule from 8am - 10pm. So at this point it looks like my only option is to set the comfort preset heat temperature to what I want and not care what the cool is set to. Then for the cooling season set the cool temperature to what I want and not care what the heat is set to.

Thank you for explaining, @Sunmixed2 ! Because I have a Learning model myself (and only heating), it turns out that I wasn't actually competent to help you figure this out. I appreciate you explaining, so that I learned something.

It sounds like you have a workaround of sorts, although it's annoying not to be able to set up the exact temperatures you want once and for all. I really wish that someone knowledgeable would answer your question directly.

Hello folks.

I'm sorry for the late reply. I know it has been a while, but I wanted to ensure that everything was covered here.

Creating custom temperature presets would vary depending on the temperature mode you've selected. So your thermostat will automatically switch to your scheduled temperature. Please let us know if you have any other questions or concerns.

Regards,

Mark

Hello Sunmixed2,

I'm checking back in. Were you able to do the steps above? I'd be glad to hear from you; I'd like to make sure everything is working.

Thanks,

Mark

Hey there,

Thanks for the clarification, and helpful reply CBFox.

I wanted to follow up with you, and see if you are still in need of any help. I also found an article with more details on temperature modes. Please let me know if that helps, or if you have any questions.

Best regards,

Jake
