Nest always behind the curve

sesanchez

I installed my nest in March. It seemed to work fine until the Texas heat really hit. Now my nest seems to always be behind the curve.
I have it programmed for 77 degrees and is always showing 81 cooling to 77. Is working because early morning is actually 76 or 77.

is it just too hot for it to keep up? I don’t recall having this issue with my old thermostat

That's discouraging, isn't it.  A possible workaround is to set your schedule and temperatures lower than you really want.  Maybe set the Nest to 74 at 8am and see if the house stays cooler all day.  Does that make a difference?

I just also want to ask if you've had your AC serviced this year, because a tech may find that there's a leak or a malfunctioning part or something.  That could explain why the AC can't seem to keep up, though it wouldn't explain why the Nest doesn't seem to try hard enough.

You do realize that the AC system cools your house, not the nest thermostat..... Right ?

This is kind of a jerk reply.

I'm having the same problem ... Nest was working fine - I could adjust the temp and it would kick on appropriately with no issue.  Then when it got really hot it started acting randomly.  The air conditioner will come on for about 5-10 seconds and then cut off.  Then several minutes to 30 minutes later it will do the same thing - over and over and over again.  It never actually turns the AC on for the amount of time needed to cool the house.  When I reset the schedule it comes on again for about 5-10 seconds and then shuts off.  When I remove the front panel from the thermostat base and then reapply the air comes on for about 5-10 seconds and then shuts off.  This is driving my crazy as my house is heating up at a rate of about 1 degree every 20-30 minutes.  I want to rip the thing off the wall as I have tried every troubleshooting step I can think of.  I've even gone so far as to turn off the thermostat, turn of the HVAC system, turn off my home power and then reinitiate home power > HVAC power > and turn the thermostat back on (I do this because a friend of mine did this and it fixed their issue).  Some actual help (not smartass replies : see maxpower ) would really be helpful.   HELP

Not sure I understand your reply.
Shouldn't Nest run the AC to keep the house at 77?
At 7 am, it is 77. Then at 10 am, it waits until is 80 and from there on, its always at 80. Maybe my old thermostat was more efficient keeping the house at the programmed temperature?

Are you saying that when you look at the Nest's schedule in Settings, every set point (including the one in effect at 10am) is calling for 77?  And that after 10am, the Nest's display still shows that it intends to cool to 77 but your compressor doesn't come on?  These questions are to try to figure out whether the issue is with the Nest's programming, or its communication with your system, or your system itself.

Correct.

It is set to keep at 77, but it does not come on until is at 80. And then it keeps the house at 80. Which is not what I want

After 10am when the temperature gets up over 77, what happens if you twirl the dial to tell the Nest you want it to cool to 74?  Does the compressor come on then, and does the house cool down some?

Yes. The compressor comes up but now is always behind. It doesn't catch up until nighttime. I know nothing about AC systems but my old thermostat would start cooling the house when it got a couple degrees above my setting. Cool the house down to my setting then wait. Nest seems to wait and then never catch up

Hey folks,

Appreciate your help here, CBFox and digitalhutch.

sesanchez, chiming in to ensure everything is good here. Have you had the chance to get in touch with an HVAC technician already?

Best,

Melba

Melba,

Yes. Tech was here. Other than refilling 2 lbs of gas and a damper motor that is always open, everything was correct. Took down the Nest and went back to my old Honeywell thermostat. House was at 77 within 3 hrs and keeping at 77 without the system running all the time.

Damper motor just arrived Thursday so we will install today. Tech says that probably ONCOR was controlling my nest. I dont know. Only thing I know is that my home is now comfortable and nest is back in its box, soon to be on ebay
