Nest compatibility

Just moved into an older home. The compatibility forum said I should be good but when I purchase and try to set up the app tells me it is not compatible. Any help would be appreciated

Hi Brinannah,

Thanks for reaching out and for the photo.

Based on the wires of your original thermostat, it seems that you have a dual fuel system. This is also called a hybrid or packaged system which is a combination of a heat pump for primary heating and cooling, and a furnace (usually gas or oil) that provides a second and/or third stage of heating.

If you do have this system, you will need to have a trained professional set up your thermostat. It’s important for a professional to assess the requirements for your specific dual fuel configuration since choosing incorrect options for a dual fuel system can result in damage to your system. We highly suggest that you contact a local pro.

Thanks for your response! Though, I am confused as to why the online compatibility questions stated the Nest would be compatible, and then AFTER it was purchased and I attempted to go thru the steps is when I got the message that it’s not compatible. And now I’m out the money, and/or have to spend more money on a “pro”.

As far as I know, I do not have a dual system.

Hey Brinannah,

Based on the wires of your current thermostat, the orange wire connected to the O terminal indicates that you have a heat pump. Also, the white wire on the W2 terminal indicates that you have a second stage heating while the E terminal with a black wire shows that  you also have auxiliary heating/cooling. Given these wires, it is best to reach out to a local pro for better assistance. They may need to trace where these wires are connected on your HVAC control board to be able to determine the proper wiring guide.

Best,

Melba
