Nest for a booster fan?

gotnick

Hello,

First, I'd like to say I have an electronics degree but school was 28 years ago.  I lost some brain cells since then.

Anyone know the wiring diagram and power requirements for a Nest?  I have a Nest on my furnace and I like using the app to control the heat and air.  My HVAC guy installed a "booster" fan for my back office.  I want to control the "on/off" of the booster fan from the Nest app so that it can be off when I'm not in the back office.  I have a second, older model Nest that still works but it's not in use.

Could I power up the old Nest with whatever voltage it needs and use a set of contacts to give me an open/close relay to control the booster fan?  I don't know the circuit but it seems like there might be a "relay" or "normally open / normally closed" condition I could use from two of the contacts on the Nest?  Also, can I have two Nests on one iPhone iOS app in the same account?

Thanks guys!

You could do this with Home Assitan,t an occupance sensor and micro relay. Set a conditional rule that would turn on the fan when the HVAC turns on, only if the sensor detects occupance.

Thank you for that. I would like to be able to turn on the fan on my way home from work via the app before I get home though.

You could always make a routine that bypassed the occupance requirement. Once you step up to a "real" home automation controller, the deficiences of stand alone Google became apparent.

Hello Mel,

Can I have two Nests on one iOS app?  Do you know the pinout of the contacts on the Nest and what they do? Do any two contacts provide a relay closure or no?

Hi gotnick,

Yes, you can have two Nest Thermostat setup on your Nest app. You invited home members have full access and control of

devices and services:

  • Add and remove other home members, including you
  • Add new devices, like speakers, displays or smart light bulbs
  • Use and change the settings of the devices in the home
  • Automatically link their media services, like YouTube, to speakers, smart displays and Chromecast built-in devices in the home

To confirm, what do you mean by 'provide a relay closure'?

Best,

Mel

@gotnick, We're glad to know that it's been sorted out. We can probably consider this one finished, so I'll close the thread in 24 hours unless I can help with anything else.
