I'm out of town and my Nest thermostat is offline. It also looks like software was last updated May, 2022. I'm trying to troubleshoot remotely, but I can't tell which generation or model I have. Everything online makes you look physically at the Nest and figure it out using clues like "double stainless steel ring" or "screen dimensions" or "yellow bubble."
1. Why in the world can't I just put the serial number in to match it with the model type? (I can see my device's serial number on its app connection).
2. Wouldn't it be helpful if they printed the model name on the device info, saving all of this hassle? It's a simple fix, and the lack of labeling makes this really frustrating.
3. How do I know if I need new AAA batteries, or if it charges with a USB, when I can't figure out which model it is?
Thanks for your help.

You won't be able to troubleshoot remotely, most of the steps need you to be physically with the device.
Nest thermostat is offline - Google Nest Help
As for finding your model, you should be able to find that under "device information" or "technical info" depending on whether you're looking at the Nest app or Google Home app.
Nest thermostat information menu - Google Nest Help
If you have Nest Learning Thermostat or Nest Thermostat E they can be charged via USB if needed, as they don't have a user accessible or replaceable battery. If you have Nest Thermostat (2020), the Google Home app will show you the charge level of the replaceable AAA batteries next to "battery state". This model does not have a USB port.

Thanks, David. Under the Next app on IOS, the model says "Display-3-4. I'm guessing this is the 1st-gen Learning Nest?

Refer to the numbers next to "display model”. The first digit of the number tells you what thermostat you have:
