What model of thermostat do you have?
How to tell which Nest thermostat you have - Google Nest Help

If you have Nest Thermostat, you'll need to use the Home app. During setup, scan the the QR code physically printed on the back of the display or manually enter the code shown below the QR code.

If you have Nest Thermostat E or Nest Learning Thermostat, you'll need to use the Nest app. During setup, tap the settings cog on the thermostat home screen > Nest app > QR code. It will show you a QR code to scan. If it doesn't, you can tap "continue without scanning" in the Nest app and select "Get entry key" on the thermostat instead.

That doesn't work because my thermostat only has 6 digits

In the home app it scans the QR code but doesn't proceed from there

Just to check, which model is it that you have?

Hang on a second, the Nest Thermostat does not ask for a pin, unless you’re trying to change the nest app owner of the nest thermostat. And a brand new installation it never asks for a pin.

Yes I'm in a new apartment and I need to be the new app owner.  And I still only have 6 digits.  In the entry code.  Not a pin

When you go to the Nest Thermostat, go to SETTINGS > NEST APP what is displayed?

It says Nest App None then on next screen it says use the recent version of the Nest app to get started. Use the entry key or QR code below. Then the options are QR code entry key or cancel.

Do you have the Nest App on your phone? First it is set up with the Nest App, then after it is all setup, you can add it to Google Home if you would like to. I have both but I prefer to use the Nest app for my thermostat.

Just started all over and it worked!  Using the wrong code.  Tried this 10 times today unsuccessfully.  Not sure why it worked now.  Thanks for trying to help me.
