Nest sensors stopped working

MikelShikel
Community Member

I’ve had two nest sensors working fine for the past 2+ years and out of nowhere they stopped connecting completely at the same exact time.

I swapped the batteries, tried bringing them right up to the thermostat (3rd gen learning) and they will not connect. I have even tried deleting them and re-adding them to my account and nothing it working.

Why did my sensors stop working? Was it a bad update? PLEASE FIX THIS.

I figured this out for anyone still looking. Take the batteries out of your sensors, reset the thermostat, put the batteries back in and check their connectivity again and they should work.

When you say "reset the thermostat" do you use the "Remove thermostat" at the bottom of the "Settings" page for the thermostat in the Nest app? And then re-add to the Nest app? I am using a Nest Learning 3rd Gen. Thanks.

No, you have to do it on the thermostat itself. You can’t do it in the app. On the thermostat go to settings, then go almost all the way to the right and click reset, and then restart.

Thank you. I'll give it a try tomorrow and report back.

Try this one uninstall the application charge the thermostat reinstall and reconnect to your home's Wi-Fi then reconnect thermostat devices

In the middle of this now but wanted to thank you for posting

One other question, before you took the batteries out of the sensors, did you "Remove Nest Temperature Sensor" in (Thermostat) Settings? My two sensors are listed at the bottom of the thermostat Settings page. If I click on either sensor, at the bottom of that page is "Remove Nest Temperature Sensor". My sensor are associated with the Nest Learning Thermostat but won't set up communication. That is why I want to try this reset. (Sorry it's been a bit busy with Christmas and all)

No, I didn’t remove them. Just pulled the batteries. After doing the steps I did before, I went back into the app and they were connected.

I had the same issue a few weeks after i set mine up. They just stopped working on a single thermostat (we have 2 both with temp sensors). This worked perfectly and saved me a huge headache. I tried to remove the batteries only and that didn't work at all.

I CANNOT thank you enough for figuring this out. Add me to the list of those it solved the problem for. Thanks again!!

Phenomenal. Such an easy fix! When you said "reset the thermostat" I was afraid you meant return it to factory settings - but all it is is restarting/rebooting the thermostat! Thanks for the help.

Hi Mike, I followed your instructions and that worked for us!  Thank you for your help 🙂

Thank you for posting this -- it worked for me 👍

I approached this with more than a little trepidation as I’m used to the “uninstall/reinstall’ nightmares of the past. THIS WAS EASY! THANK YOU!

Thank you so very much for your post. I have 6 sensors, 3 used for temp regulations, the other three for amusement. They all disconnected for no reason. I'm so thankful to have found your post. I did what you said and all is well. Thanks once again.

This worked for me. I had to leave the battery out for 5 minutes before I reset, but it worked. Thank you SO MUCH!

Thank you for the advice! I had previously had no luck after changing batteries in 2 of 4 sensors that stopped working while the other 2 continued to connect just fine. I also had no success simply resetting thermostat. It wasn’t until I read this that I found the right combination for a fix. Here’s exactly what I did:

1. REMOVED/DELETED the two affected sensors from the APP

2. REMOVED the new BATTERIES from both sensors and left them out 5 MINUTES

3. WHILE the batteries were out of the sensors, I performed a RESET at the thermostat as described previously.

4. After the thermostat reset finished and the batteries sat out of the sensors for 5 full minutes, I went through the normal process of adding the sensors as if they were new using the “+Add product” function in the app- WAITING until the Nest app said to remove battery tab to reinsert the batteries.

5. Completed the sensor setup and CONNECTION CHECK which worked for the first time after a couple days of unsuccessful connection attempts!

Thanks to this blog and another that had users leave the batteries out a little longer, my 2 sensors FINALLY connected quickly and flawlessly.

Unfortunately the easy fix is not always the quick fix because it takes longer. So you just need to reset the whole system and reinstall the temperature sensors to the system Make sure they're properly labeled for each room would be the easiest way to do it most people just want the quick fix but in this situation there really isn't one. I really wish the system would give you the option to see the battery life in each one of your sensors so we can monitor when we need the new batteries

I had the exact same issue. Sensor just stopped. Replaced the battery but did not work. Tried connecting the sensor to one of my other Nest Learning thermostats and it did not work. Removed the sensor from my account and added it back and it did not work. Will try resetting a thermostat and removing the battery from the sensor for at least 5 mins and see if that works. Beginning to have my doubts about the google nest family of products as I have had a ton of problems with a recent install of Nest Hello with connectivity. BTW using an Orbi 3 mesh router (one main and two satellites and we have 5 nest thermostats that all work fine. Any other ideas before I call them would be great.

Did the battery removal and thermostat reset and it worked. Connected again. What an ordeal. Now if I can get the Nest Hello to work consistently.

That is GREAT news. We are in a bit of a cold snap and I haven't reset mine. I'm a bit 'gun shy' as I 'reset' my "Google Nest Thermostat" (white ring) to try and get it to work properly. Then it wouldn't reconnect so I had to rush and get this Nest Learning Thermostat which other than the remote sensors is keeping us warm. I will try shortly.

Process of resetting did not work for me.  Battery is 100%

Did you take batteries out of remote sensors for 5+ mins. before selecting "Reset" on thermostat itself?

@MtViewerCA This worked for me!

I had the exact same issues. I did what you said and it worked!

Thank you for attributing the solution to me but it was "MikelShikel" above who figured it out. A GREAT job.

My sensors are working now and are able to do what I want. Hope all keeps working properly.

All the best.👍

1. Remove batteries from all temp sensors, wait 5 min
2. Reset the thermostat. Mainly to confirm the network connection, but this ended up removing the connection from the Thermostat from my phone nest app.
*On the thermostat go into Settings > Reset > Network/WWN Connection
*I then removed the thermostat from my phone nest app via Settings > Remove thermostat
3. Reboot iPhone. This one I would never have figured out. To get the thermostat connected back to my phone nest app I had to power the phone down and back on again.
4. Re-install batteries to all 3 temp sensors
5. Re-add thermostat to nest app. Follow prompts. Starts with scanning the code on the back of the nest device. Just pull it off the wall - it's not wired directly - there is a quick disconnect type thing so just pull straight off to get the qr code. Then go into the Settings to find the nest app 6 character code to allow pairing to your phone. Now you should have the thermostat back in the nest app but still no sensors assigned to it.
6. Find the sensors in the nest app Settings. Click 'check connection'. Should be successful now (even if it never was before). Click 'Done' and it should be assigned to the thermostat now. Or add any new sensors by clicking add a new product and following the prompts. Repeat for any remaining temp sensors.
7. Done. Everything should be connected again.

Thank you! This process is what finally did the trick for me.

I had this problem only a week after setting up my Nest Thermostat and Sensors. I followed the steps and it WORKED great!

However, I am about a month removed from original install, and about 3weeks from first troubleshoot and my sensors are again all offline (original issue). I have the Nest Wifi Router and 2 Nest Spots set up so our internet is fast and strong throughout the whole house.

Wondering if someone else has had this issue happen more than once and so close together. I live in WI and it's literally -14° with a -26° wind chill. So I can't afford to have sensors not working as the baby's room can get cold. Any insight?

WI_Dad sorry the connection isn't working with the remote sensors. Once I followed "MikelShikel" instructions and got things working I haven't had problems. We set most of the day off a sensor in the living space of the house (downstairs) and then switch (automatically) to the bedroom (upstairs) for the night/morning. So far so good.

Here's how I fixed my issue with my temperature sensors not connecting to the system.

I uninstalled the application next.

Then I charged the Google Nest thermostat.

I'm having the same problem with my temperature sensor as everyone else. It was offline for months but reconnected once I got a new Nest thermostat. I was pretty happy for about 3 hours when the sensor went offline again. Thinking it was the battery, I replaced it and that didn't work. So I bought a new sensor and it won't connect either.

Before I restart the actual Nest thermostat, can someone confirm the thermostat will automatically reconnect to the WiFi? I don't want to end up with bigger problems than I already have! Thanks

I've reinstalled in redone all of the sensors a couple times and no the system will not automatically connect to your Wi-Fi you have to type in the password to make sure everything is good to go then you have to reconnect each and every single one of your sensors they're saved but you have to go in and just click on the sensor in the main menu then retest and they will automatically connect
