Nest thermostat add to Google Home wedges.

In Google Home.  The process of adding a thermostat fails.  I tried 2 different ways (QR code and manual entry).  Both failed

For QR code I get "Error! Unable to start device pairing.  Configuration not available."

For "Continue without scanning, I manually enter the setup code as displayed by the Nest and get to a screen which asks for the last 4 digits of the serial number but WITH NO WAY TO ACTUALLY ENTER THEM. There is no other option.  Pretty pathetic.

How do I fix this???  Does Google not actually test this thing?

What is the serial number or model of your thermostat, maybe you used the wrong application for the set up?

Hello folks,

I wanted to stop by and see how I could help.

I appreciate your input, @Anonymous.

@phlfromseattle, I'm sorry to hear you're having issues setting up your Nest Thermostat. I'd love to help.

A few questions: could you please tell us the Nest Thermostat model you have? Do you have other Nest devices? If so, going over these steps might help:

For the Nest Thermostat 2020:

  1. Remove the thermostat display from its base and take out the batteries for at least 3 minutes before plugging them back in
  2. Wait until it's ready. Enable the phone's Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connections and ensure that there are no Bluetooth devices connected
  3. Open the Google Home app
  4. Proceed by adding the device again.

For the Nest Learning Thermostat and the Nest Thermostat E:

  1. Press and hold the thermostat screen for 10 seconds until it shuts down to restart
  2. Once ready. Continue the prompt in the thermostat screen until you see the Nest App option
  3. Open the Nest app and setup the device.

Please let me know if that helps.

Regards,

Mark

Hard to say what model it is as the device markings don't actually say.  However, I believe it is the right application (google home).  What is weird, after that fun exercise I set it up with the nest application (which worked) and when I later checked google home for something else, the nest thermostat showed up. Glad it did but it doesn't change the fact that Google Home is a big fat dumbed down mess. And Nest, anything even slightly complicated and they say hire a pro.  Feh.

Hi there,

I'm sorry for the experience you had when you tried adding it to the Google Home app. I totally understand your insights, and we'll take this as feedback. But I wanted to ensure that everything was covered here. Is your thermostat working as intended over the app and on the actual thermostat?

If there’s anything else I can help you with, please let me know.

Regards,

Mark

Thanks for asking.  Yes, all seems to be well.  Just grumbling over the utterly clumsy path getting there.

Hello phlfromseattle,

That's a relief. I'm glad to hear you were able to sort it out. It looks like we have come to a solution, so I'm going to lock this thread within 24 hours. If you have any other concerns or questions, please feel free to create a new thread.

Same problem.  Did you find a solution? (as if anyone is actually listening)
