What are the options to have the battery replaced when the thermostat has a Non replaceable battery? I just called customer service and they said my only option is to purchase a new one for $220. At this rate $220 every 3 years defeates the savings of having a smart thermostat.

Assuming you have the 3rd gen thermostat, then changing the battery can be done. All you need is a very small Philips screwdriver, and take your time. There is only 6 screws to remove, and a delicate connection ribbon/connector. The battery unplugs, and is fixed with double sided tape. The hardest part is finding the correct battery for the right price.

I have a smart phone that cost nearly $1000 dollars and changing the battery costs $$$ to. You can downgrade to a basic Nest thermostat and change the double A batteries one a year.
