Remember that step in the instructions it said, make sure you take a picture of your old thermostat before you proceed to take it off the wall? How about posting that picture so we can see what the wires were connected to before.  As for the color of the wire, I’m not aware of any thermostat no matter how smart is can tell the color of the wire.
