New Burnham X 2 and zone with Nest Learning

My place had 4 standard mechanical thermostats, simple two wire low voltage connection. Upstairs is baseboard radiator heat two thermostat and two zones, lower has in floor hydronic radiant heat, two zones. The two upstairs connected to app and one used the other to help connect itself. Easy. Then I start into the down stairs. Slightly thinner wires, but still simple red and white two wire.

During setup when looking to another learning thermostat to help assist with setup, it just kept saying something went wrong and try making sure I’m close to it or on the same network, which they all are. No connection to app. I finished set up without app and connected manually to same network. Thermostat works but says low battery on the app menu selector. The second downstairs Nest learning when trying to connect it said it didn’t have enough battery power and would connect when it did.
I got the learning version on purpose as I saw a few videos showing I shouldn’t need a C-wire or power supply.
Is there really an onboard battery? And how long would it take to fully charge? I was able to set up both of the lower level Nests but one says low battery when trying to connect with app, and now the other says low battery and won’t even connect wirelessly.
I should mention all are connected with on the same boiler. These are not two separate heating systems. Thanks!

Hello Pinehillcabin17,

Thanks for posting and sorry for the delayed response.

We appreciate you keeping up with our Nest devices and I'm sorry for the issue you're experiencing getting a low battery to both of them.

Most of the time, Nest thermostats can use your heating connections to charge their internal battery. To reliably supply power to their thermostats and avoid future power issues, you might need to connect a common wire, often known as a C wire, or the Nest Power Connector.  To know how it works, here's a quick link.

Regards,

Mark

Hey everyone,

We haven't heard from you in a while so we'll be locking this thread if there is no update within 24 hours. If you have any new issues, updates or just a discussion topic, feel free to start a new thread in the Community.

Hi Mark. THank you for getting back to me. I moved my Orbis around in the house and the two thermostats in the downstairs that were not previously connected are now connected. I do not know if it was a software update that fixed it, or the moving of the Mesh system. They show a weak connection, but I can see and control them on the app now, and the low voltage power pair seem to be enough to power them for now. I will update if anything changes. Thanks again for the reply!

Hi Pinehillcabin17,

I'm happy to hear that you've been able to get everything working well. It sounds like moving your mesh points did the trick for you. Connection strength is important, for sure, as a weak connection can cause dropouts and a host of problems. If everything is stable even on a weak connection, you're probably in the clear. I'm sure you can do a bit more experimenting to improve the strength if you see more problems, but hopefully you've sorted this for good. We'll keep the thread open for a while longer to make sure things stay stable.

Thanks,
Jeff
