New Google Nest for office

gbb1995

I was installing a new Google Nest for the office.  I was able to get it installed and working but it was blowing cold air with the heat on.  The old thermostat does have a jumper from R to RC.  Do you think that is the issue?

Hi gbb1995,

Uh-oh! I'm sorry to hear that your newly installed Nest Thermostat is blowing cold air with the heat on. Are you located in North America or Europe? What type of Nest Thermostat do you have? And could you send us a photo of your previous thermostat wiring configuration and a photo of how you connected the wires to the Nest Thermostat base? You may check with our Compatibility Checker to determine if a Nest thermostat is compatible with your heating and cooling system.

Also, sometimes heating or cooling systems can behave strangely. For instance, you may notice your system is always on, it won’t turn on, it turns off and on repeatedly, or it makes strange noises. If so, there may be a power issue. Troubleshoot strange heating or cooling behavior with this guide.

Keep us posted. We're happy to help.

Best,

Zoe

Zoe,

Thanks for your email.  I'm located in Texas.  I'm not sure how to tell the difference in Google Nest Thermostats?  It was made 05/2023.  Our HVAC system and we have four units at the Scout office.  I bought four Google Nests.  I do have pictures.  How can I attach them?

Hi there,

Thanks for getting back to us. I see that you have the Nest Thermostat 2020. You could put the wiring configuration image of your previous thermostat and the image of how you connected the wires to your Google Drive, copy the link, and send it here so we can take a closer look.

Thanks,

Zoe

Hello gbb1995,

Gotcha. Let's see what's going on. A few questions:

  • Does the thermostat screen indicate that it’s actively calling for heating?
  • What type of furnace do you have? (gas, electric, etc.)
  • When did heating last work?
  • Did heating ever work with the Nest Thermostat? If not, did the heating work with the previous thermostat?
  • Did you turn off the power to the HVAC system?
    • Did you recently turn off any breakers?
    • Have you recently experienced a brownout or blackout?
    • Is there a light switch near the heater that controls an outlet?
  • Did you select the correct fuel type?
  • Do the LED lights blink on the HVAC control board? If yes, locate the light.
  • When was the last time you changed the furnace's air filter?
  • Have you experienced extremely cold weather lately?
  • Is this the first notable temperature drop of the year in the area?

Also, gather the power readouts of your Nest Thermostat 2020's VIN, IIN, and PS-* under Settings > Equipment > Power Info

I'll look forward to your response.

Kind regards,

Zoe

  • Does the thermostat screen indicate that it’s actively calling for heating?
    • Yes.  When i had the nest hooked up, I had it on heating.  After about an hour of messing with, I switched it back to the old thermostat.  It has been that way since.
  • What type of furnace do you have? (gas, electric, etc.)
    • Four Electrical Furnaces
  • When did heating last work?
    • It was working before I changed it and has worked since I changed it.  It just running the cool air and the temps were falling while I was running the Nest.  When I switched it back to the old one, worked just fine.  Just to be clear, I have a Nest in my home and it works fine.
  • Did heating ever work with the Nest Thermostat? If not, did the heating work with the previous thermostat?
    • No.  The heating worked prior to switching Thermostats and continues to work after switching back to the old Thermostat.
    • Did you turn off the power to the HVAC system?
      • No.  I kept the breaker on while switching.  Very low power to it.
      • Did you recently turn off any breakers?
        • No
      • Have you recently experienced a brownout or blackout?
        • No
      • Is there a light switch near the heater that controls an outlet?
        • No
  • Did you select the correct fuel type?
    • I have to check on this.  I might try this next week.  Is the default gas?  I see how to do this through my app for the house.  I had it on the app for the office.
  • Do the LED lights blink on the HVAC control board? If yes, locate the light.
    • The HVACs are on the roof.  I did not open up the control board
  • When was the last time you changed the furnace's air filter?
    • One month ago
  • Have you experienced extremely cold weather lately?
    • No.  Texas hasn't gotten cold yet.  Extreme cold is rare in Texas.
  • Is this the first notable temperature drop of the year in the area?
    • It has been pretty mild.
  • Also, gather the power readouts of your Nest Thermostat 2020's VIN, IIN, and PS-* under Settings > Equipment > Power Info
    • I'll do this when I switch it to the Nest again.
  • Just to be clear, I have four Nests for the four furnaces at our office.  I first attempted to switch the thermostat in my office before doing the other three.  After I installed the Nest, I noticed it was blowing cold air.  The day I did it, the temps were mild 60-70s.  I got the app going and tried to turn on the heat.  It just blowing cold air.  I waited an hour total and then decided to switch back to the old Thermostat.  It was been on the old thermostat since.

Hello there,

I'm sorry for the late reply—yes, I was able to view the photos. Were you able to access the Nest Thermostat and have you switched to the Nest Thermostat again? If so, gather the power readouts of your thermostat so we can check for the voltage that it receives from your system.

Best regards,

Zoe
