We have lived in this house for 7 months - through summer and now winter

weve been hit with our gas bill along with everyone else and we don’t think we are running our  heating at all right !
Can someone with some insight into this system please help le understand eco and how I can save money on this thank you !

"Eco" isn't a sophisticated system for saving money  --  it's just a lower temperature that you can set the Nest to.  You can switch to that mode manually as you leave the house, or you can try having the Nest do it, by detecting when you're not home, through the Home/Away Assist feature (which may or may not function well for you; it can be tricky).

Are you already running the Nest on a schedule so that at all times the temperature is as low as you can stand?  If your schedule is pretty predictable you don't need Home/Away Assist.  If you're out of the house for long periods irregularly, Home/Away Assist may be helpful.
