Shuts Off Whenever I Walk By Thermostat

Godzillaspet

Whenever I walk by my thermostat it will turn off the heater or ac if it is currently running. I have had my Nest for four years and it has always done this. I avoid walking by it while the AC or heater is running to prevent this.

Hello Godzillaspet,

Thank you for taking the time to let us know about your inquiry. I'd be happy to take a look at this for you.

The Wake-on-approach feature seems to be in reverse, which should activate it instead when it detects movement. A few questions: did it turn on when you walked by, or did it just deactivate your system? What Nest Thermostat model is this? Were there any temperature schedules or programs in the settings that would turn off the system, such as the Routines or the Home and Away Assist?

Let me know how it goes.

Regards,
Mark

It is a Nest Learning Thermostat and it has done it since I purchased it new. I assumed it was a feature that I could never figure out the purpose.

It will turn on and light up but then it promptly turns off the AC or heater when it lights up even if it isn’t within its programmed range.

Thank you,

Sebastian

Hey there,

Got it. Could you please check the Display or Wake Display settings on your actual thermostat? If you see "Wake on Press,", tap on it and enable it. Once done, press and hold the thermostat screen for 10 seconds until it shuts down to restart.

As soon as the thermostat is ready, try activating your system, wait a few minutes until it goes blank, and press the ring again to turn it on. If it doesn't turn off your system, go back to the Display or Wake Display settings and turn it back to the "Wake on approach".

Let me know if it helps.

Regards,
Mark

Omg! Mark,

You are a genius. It appears to be working properly now. Will update if it reverts back but at least I know how to reset it now which seems to have cleared the fault!

Thank you!
