Temp Sensors driving me nuts

RookStar
Community Member

I recently bought a home with a Nest thermostat and 3 temp sensors installed.
After getting the thermostat online I connected the 3 sensors in their original locations. Within a few days they had all lost connection. I had to delete and reinstall to get them connected again but the same thing happened and they lost connection after a few days. I gave up for a couple months but then got a more reliable ISP and thought to try it again. Now the sensors won't even connect as new devices.
These things could be useful because I definitely have different temps in different rooms of the house but they seem more trouble than they are worth. What is going on here?

Rookster,

when you changed to a new ISP, did your WiFi router change and this the IP address of the LAN network change or perhaps the WiFi SSID has changed? If the SSID changed the Nest thermostat will need to be reconfigured within the Network settings.  After that, you will be able to reset and add remote sensors.

Hi there - yes the Wifi SSID has changed and the Nest is connected to the new Wifi network. Is there some other reconfiguration I need to do beyond that?

Typically, the Nest app already has the temperature sensors registered.  When the network changes, you sometimes need to remove the battery of the temperature sensor and wait several minutes then put it back in ans see if it gets recognized. The remote sensors us a special version of Bluetooth LE to communicate with the Nest thermostat.

I have never succeeded in reconnecting a sensor once it’s connection has been dropped. Tried this multiple times with different sensors on both Wi-Fi networks. I tried taking out the battery today on one of the sensors, deleting it in the app and putting the battery back in. I could not even get it set up as a new sensor which at least in the past I had been able to do (even if the connections were unstable and short-lived).

If you deleted the sensor you stuck. You cannot re-add it without the QR code it came with.

The QR codes are on the inside of the sensors. I have successfully added all 3 sensors twice before. Reconnecting them was unsuccessful but deleting and re-adding worked. This time for some reason they are not connecting when I try to add them.

Hello folks,

I wanted to stop by and see how I could help.

Thanks for helping here, Ken.

@RookStar, I'm sorry to hear that you're having issues reconnecting your Temperature Sensors to your Wi-Fi network, and I appreciate all the steps you've taken. I'd love to give it another shot.

Going over these steps might help:

  1. Restart your thermostat to refresh its connection.
  2. Move the sensors close to your thermostat.
  3. Remove the batteries from your sensors for at least 3 minutes before plugging them back in to restart.
  4. Remove the sensors from the Nest app if they are still linked.
  5. Proceed by adding your sensors in the Nest app.

Please let me know if that helps, or if the issue still persists.

Regards,

Mark
