Terrible customer service after thermostat broke

jfbourner

"I experienced a frustrating situation yesterday when my thermostat failed due to a hardware issue at 8 PM UK time. Despite the website advertising 24/7 support, both the callback service and chat function were unavailable.

I tried calling the alternative number listed under the callback section, only to encounter a suspicious experience. The representative insisted I provide my email address, specifically demanding it be a Google account, followed by sharing a verification code. When I refused to share the code—following standard security advice about not sharing codes with anyone—the representative became hostile and told me to hang up. Upon expressing my concern about this poor customer service, he abruptly terminated the call.

To make matters worse, I was later charged £27 by Vodafone for the call. While I managed to speak with UK customer service this morning and found them helpful, they were unable to address the previous night's issues.

I'm particularly disappointed by two aspects: first, the substandard US customer service experience, and second, that a multi-billion pound company refuses to compensate me for costs incurred due to their faulty product and misleading website information, which failed to warn about potential call charges.

Sadly this is a community forum, so Google are not interested one littel bit about the problem on here!!

However, I assume you are in the UK? When did you purchase the thermsostat, and who sold/installed the thermostat? Not names, but retailer, installer, you etc.?

Hi Lucia,

I encountered a hardware issue with the device—specifically a Wi-Fi/W5 error that prevented network detection. This appears to be a known problem, as the customer service representative immediately offered to replace the device and requested I return the faulty unit.

I requested a callback on Saturday morning and spoke to a nice lady, and impressively, I received a replacement  by Sunday morning.

However, I have some significant concerns:

The advertised support number "+1 (844) 229-2208" resulted in substantial international calling charges (£27).
The support process required sharing my Gmail email address and verification code.
The operator's communication style was unprofessional, and they abruptly ended the call.
Despite the prompt device replacement, these issues have been frustrating.

Hi, @jfbourner,

Thank you so much for your prompt response. I'm glad to hear that your recent customer service experience was better than the last one, and I appreciate you letting me know your device was replaced.

I apologize to hear that you were charged for an international call. It seems that the number corresponds to a US number. To contact customer service in the UK, I recommend filling out the contact us form during business hours to ensure a qualified agent can provide the best assistance.

I understand that you may feel hesitant about the verification process and sharing personal information. However, this information is requested for security purposes.

Thank you for sharing your feedback with customer service. Your opinion is valued and helps us improve Google services.

Please don't hesitate to reply if you have any further questions.

Best regards,

Ana
