I have a 2nd generation Nest Thermostat that worked fine for about one year. Then it did no longer light up when getting close. After recharging it worked but only for one week. Does the Thermostat ned the battery for this feature eve tough it is hard wired and worked for one year? If yes, Can the battery already be bad after one year? Thank you.

Hey SH1,
Thanks for posting and sorry for the delay.
Yes, your Nest Learning Thermostat uses it's internal battery for this feature. If your thermostat’s internal battery charge gets too low, it will take steps to preserve battery life, so it can continue to keep you comfortable and help save energy for as long as possible. When this happens, you'll notice that you’ll need to be closer to your thermostat than usual for the screen to turn on or the screen will turn off completely.
Do you happen to have a C wire which supplies constant power to your thermostat? If you're unsure, could you provide a photo of your Nest thermostat wires?
Best,
Melba
