Thermostat not detecting power to Rh

JRahi

Like many threads on this forum, I am having trouble connecting the learning nest thermostat. I have had it in the box for 2 years because I tried it when I first got it and gave up.

I have a typical HVAC system (gas fired hot air) the old thermostat had only 3 wires and labels on the terminals. Colors red, white and green. I figured I needed the C wire so I connected the blue wire that was unused in the wire bundle to the chassis at the heating unit and verified that I have 24V between the red wire and this C.

connected the nest thermostat but got the “no power to Rh detected” and the thermostat shuts down.

  • what do I need to do?

Hi @JRahi!

Thanks for posting in the community.
I’m sorry for the inconvenience that you’ve been experiencing with your Nest thermostat. I understand that since you bought the Nest thermostat, it hasn’t worked for you. You are receiving an error message that says that the Nest thermostat is not receiving power into the Rh terminal. No worries, help is here.

To further assist you, I need some extra information. Here are a couple of questions for you:

  • What type of Nest thermostat do you have?
  • Have you checked if the wires are properly stripped and seated on the thermostat base?
  • What exactly does the message that you receive from your Nest thermostat say?
  • Who installed the Nest thermostat?
  • Have you charged the Nest thermostat?
  • Have you checked if the breakers are on?
  • What other troubleshooting steps have you done so far?
  • Have you contacted a technician before?

I will be waiting for your response.

Regards,

Daniel.

Daniel,
Thank you for the offer to help.
I have the learning thermostat 3rd generation
Wires are properly stripped and properly seated
I installed the thermostat. I also installed 2 other Honeywell smart thermostats in another property without any issues.
Yes I charged the battery after reviewing some of the posts but did not change anything.
The breaker is on (I installed the old thermostat back and it worked so I am sure the power is fine). I also checked the voltage; I have 24V between red and green wires, 13 volts between red and white. I connected the C wire (blue) from the heater chassis and measured 24V between the red and blue.

The error message when the white wire was on the W1: no power to Rh wire detected. Learn more at nest.com/e74

I switched the white wire to Y1 (instead of W1). The error message then: equipment sensed on No HVAC connected. Wires installed Y1-Rh-G-O/B

I have not contacted a technician.

Thank you
