Thermostat temp sensor wrong

Nest thermostat reads wrong temp.

for instance, this morning temp in house was 15, nest showed 18, so the heating never came on, everyone in house cold. I’ve reset it countless times, nowhere near a window, insulated behind it. I’ve  even connected it to the garage wifi incase the wifi in the hose was too close.

love  the thermostat, but this is really annoying.

its doing my box in.

We are having the exact same issue.the house we bought came with the Nest 3rd gen wireless thermostat (god if money wasn’t tight I’d change it), I’ve done the whole rigmarole of resetting it to our account, linking it up and doing all the above regarding sunblock (despite it being on a stand nowhere near anything that’ll affect it) etc.. yet it’s always displaying the inside temp as 18 degrees but it’s always freezing cold inside?! I’ll have to buy a thermometer because this can’t be right, I can’t believe I’m having to do this because it’s so untrustworthy.

One more person with the same issue. I spent hours with CS trying to resolve the issue to no avail. They offered to send a new unit but I think I'll just take it out. Seems crazy that one of the most basic functions of a thermostat can't be properly build. I'll go back to my basic thermostat, at least it can heat my house.

Same here. The nest thermostat is on the same location as our old generic electronic one - so if the problem was drafts or a warm wall, it would have been affected the same way.

A thermometer in the room confirms the nest detects a temperature that's about 4 degrees F warmer than it really is.

I bought a nest thermostat and paid a plumber a lot of money to install in.

I am in the UK and the thermostat is reading 22c when its closer to 17c.

This is terrible! I wake up cold, come home to a cold house!

Mine worked fine for a couple years, now it’s off about 5 to 8°F. I’m tired of this, made no changes to the device, what horrible junk.

I had this issue and here is how I fixed it.

1. Mine was wall mounted ,,,,, there is a hole for the wire in the middle - mine was just a tiny hole for the wire I knocked out the fulk hole in the wall to allow air to the back of the nest to aid with overheating (was a false wall).

2. Did a full factory reset on the nest and repaired to heatlink (using 6 digit code)

3. set brigness on NEST to lowest setting (helps reduce heat in the nest unit)

4. Enable sunblock

5. turn off farsight (stops it lighting up all the NEST UNIT all the time, further reducing internaql heat in the nest)

Mine now reads perfectly the same as the 2 digital thermometers I benchmark it with (before all this nest was always 2-3oC HIGHER).

Hope this helps someone.

Hey folks,

Thanks for sharing what helped get your issue fixed, @PAD.

To all, I suggest trying the steps provided above.

Keep us posted.

Best,

Mel

Other than knocking a bigger hole in the wall, I don't see how these other steps will help me (I don't even know what step 2 is, heatlink?). My Nest is set to maintain a nighttime temperature, when the the display should never be turning on, of 64 degrees but I wake up in the morning and the house is 61 degree (Nest says it's 65)!! I've had enough, the Nest is gone and I'll put in another smart thermostat that is properly designed and tested.

Having the same issue. I had the screen pop up to attach back to base even though it was attached. I held the base down to do a restart and when it came back on it said the in side temp was 7 degrees higher. I moved a nest sensor to within a foot of the sensor and it confirmed the disparity.

I want to add to this. My Nest 2020 Thermostat was fine up until a few days ago. The product is a little bit over a year old and it's out of warranty now and is not properly working, what a coincidence. The temperature reading is like 4-5F+ degrees higher than the ACTUAL temperature in the room. It's gotten even worse today, it doesn't seem to go lower than 68F degrees now.

I tried to troubleshoot the issue every way: restart/reset/reinstalled wires at both ends/cleaned the device, maybe dust was blocking sensor/taken out batteries for several minutes/replaced batteries. The only thing left for me to do is buy another tstat and check if the problem is maybe the actual wire. If the other tstat works, I know for sure the problem is the Nest.

As of right now I would never recommend any Google hardware, stick to building software. Looking at this thread, it seems like this issue has been ongoing for years now and Google is just ignoring consumers. Google should be reported to BBB for their lack of support on this issue.

Wow. I wish I would’ve come here first. I had no reason to, but now I am frustrated. I’ve had a nest thermostat years ago and it was great… we bought our new house and I wanted it again because I didn’t like the app for the one installed but at least that thermostat worked correctly. This thermostat is a joke. When it is 66 in here it’s saying it’s 76… when I said eff it and told it to heat to 78 it did for a second and claims it’s 80 in here when it’s MAYBE 68….MAYBE.

the kicker is that I bought this at kohls with kohls cash so I basically lose my money because I could’ve spent that on something else. Thought I was getting a good deal and here I am in the cold winter and rain and having to reinstall my old one.

I own multiple nest products, this has definitely put me off from purchasing anymore.

how hard can it be to fix an issue that clearly tons of people have called out? Your canned customer service responses do no good. Don’t send me an article, I’ve read them. I’ve restarted, I’ve factory reset. It’s dead center in my house, it’s 6am as I write this and dark as hell. There is nothing that should continue to tell this thing that it’s 10+ degrees WARMER in my house.

I spent all morning with customer service just to search online and find this thread. That this is a known issue is mind boggling to be and I'm not knocking a hole in my wall for a thermostat to work. I'm just going to buy a new thermostat.

I came back here to say that now, all of the sudden, all 5 of my temp sensors have gone offline and won’t connect to the thermostat. They worked fine and then all at once didn’t, great job google. Another $200 down the drain.

Added a C-Wire using 24V Adapter and the indoor temperate is showing + 10 deg F.

My Nest is now reading temperature about 3-4 degrees hotter than it actually is (this started a few days ago). I've had the unit for almost 5 years now.

Is there any solution here or is Google ignoring all the complaints as usual?

They’re just ignoring it. All my sensors stopped working that are like $40 each and my thermostat just decides that it’ll stop heating at a different temperature than I set it to so that’s been new and fun

I've just started having the same problem, I have a Gen 2 Nest set to come on in the morning at 19°c but thermostat is reporting it's 19° so it doesn't turn on, when in fact the temperature is 14-15°.

Looking at this thread it has been getting reported for a couple of years, why haven't they fixed it, I've always found probems get fix fast in the past.

Looks like I with be be buying a different make thrmostat fed up with waking up to a cold house.

I have 2 nest thermostats.  The first one I have had for 5 years, works perfect.  The second one I just got, And it has the incorrect inside temp issue described by so many on this thread...  the inside temp is off from 2-10 degrees.

So, this thread goes back to 2021... Crazy!  Google, I asked ChatGPT why you are failing.  Among many reasons stated, one was your complete failure to listen to those who use your products.  Maybe once your AI is up and running you might listen to it?

Update; I was able to contact Google Nest last night and after a very long conversation they requested I turn off the wifi on the nest thermostat (reset menu, account connection).  And they requested I monitor the temp differential for 24 hours.

I asked why the Wifi might be affecting the temp.  The tech guy had to go ask, but the answer was some of the wifi chip/antenna's are running hot and affecting the temp sensor...

Sounded like a decent theory!   So I removed the account connection, disabling the wifi.  Last night the temp was off 3 degrees.  This AM its off by 1.   So by tonight I hope to see it match.    The tech said they will replace the unit if the temp is correct after 24hrs of disabled wifi.

If they ship me a new unit and it works I will not be updating this thread, consider this the resolution.

What ever happened?

Nothing… I tried reinstalling it in my new place 1+ years later and it’s still shot. Threw it in the trash last night

My new favorite thing is having all my thermostats and my main one next to each other and they all read differently. Gotta love the wasted money.

Same here, worked perfectly for 6 months but now it reads 2 or 3 degrees higher than it really is. I've restarted it and each time it shows the correct temp, the heating flicks on but within 2 minutes its showing higher and the heating flicks off again. I've turned off the WiFi/changed sunblock and the brightness of the screen. Its actually crazy that this has been a known issue for so long and yet no solution is given from Google.

Makes you realise that expensive doesn't always mean premium.

spent a day trying to get this thermostat to behave properly , my reference probe was reading 71 F, nest was reading 74 !!! reset it and then it read 76 F, reset it again and it read 72 . Because it was so poor at responding acurrately , froze up my A-coil in the furnace . Replaced it with my trustly Lux thermostst and it came in bang on and behaving normally. NEVER AGAIN, I really feel cheated with this purchase !

I threw the thermostat in the trash yesterday, well electric recycling actually. Tried installing it in my new apartment and it’s still shot. Google made a trash product
