Thermostat will not cool, stuck on 82

I went away for one night and my thermostat was on 82 when I came back. It usually takes two hours to cool again and it did not last night.

I checked the air vents, and cold air is blowing out of them but the thermostat will not budge from 82 upstairs and 78 downstairs.

Hey, Kara! I had the same problem. The AC unit outside would spin (as in it works) but the inside didn’t cool and it was stuck on 83 for three days.

it’s your AC CAPACITOR. It’s like a little silver bottle inside your AC unit that needs to be changed. I changed mine on my own using Yotube tutorials. The bottle ran me $30 and was easy to swap out. Make sure you breaker box is off! You don’t want to electrocute yourself.

Hi, @dan18937,

Thank you so much for reaching out to the community. I'm truly sorry your thermostat is not cooling. I’m happy to provide you with further assistance.

To better assist you, I’d like to know:

  • What type of thermostat do you have?
  • Would you mind sharing a photo of your wiring configuration?
  • Do you have a conventional or a heat pump system?
  • When did your system last receive a professional maintenance check?
  • Did you create a schedule with your thermostat?

In the meantime, you can try these steps:

  • Check if the thermostat wires are secured in their terminals and all the buttons are down.
  • Reseating the thermostat display by following these instructions:
    • Remove the thermostat display from its base for about 5 seconds.
    • Reattach the display.
    • Wait for 10 seconds.

Feel free to ask any questions you might have along the way.

Best regards,

Ana.
