Wiring Question - Nest Thermostat

derekt

Hi All,

Picked up a Nest Learning Thermostat and want to be sure I am correctly setting up the wires.

Here is the original thermostat set up:

Here is how I configured it:

Here is my current HVAC system:

My concerns are:

  1. Should white wire be in the current position, W1 or should it be instead in the W2?
  2. Should that Orange wire be in the O/B?

Thanks so much in advance. (I know there are countless posts like this, but couldn't find anything with my exact system).

Hi derekt,

Thanks for reaching out. Based on the photo, it looks like the wiring is correct. The white wire should be fine with the W1 terminal as long as you programmed it as emergency heat during the setup.

Thanks,

Edward

Hi @EdwardT i ended up putting it into W2, as it seemed to line up with this article. https://christierney.com/2017/02/24/nest-thermostat-and-heat-pumps-w-aux/

but it shows as brown in my app, not white.

Hey there,

We usually do not rely on the color of the wires alone. The most reliable method is to use the labels of the terminals where the wire was connected to on your original thermostat or trace what terminal is the wire connected to your HVAC's control board.

Thank you but where does one find their hvac board?

Also I provided original thermostat screenshot. Did that help?

Hi derekt,

Thanks for the response. The wiring of your Nest Thermostat looks correct based on the photos that you've sent. How's it going? Do you notice anything unusual?

Thanks,

Edward

Hi Edward,

Its summer here so I haven't had any need to turn the Heat on yet.
